I've been using both mineral oil and tuf glide as a lubricant for my knives for a year now. I have to say, I FAR prefer mineral oil and I am very disappointed with tufglide. It seems like it makes my knife even more sluggish than it was when dry and it smells like petroleum death. Mineral oil on the other hand, makes my knives slick as can be and for a long time.

I don't find mineral oil attracts dust any more than tufglide and it's scent free and food safe. I like to use a lube where I don't have to worry about contaminating my food. Mineral oil is also very good at cleaning out dirt when you re-lube the pivot. Also its WAY cheaper and has tons of good uses! Like maintaining cutting boards and many other things!

The only real downside I've heard of mineral oil is dust attraction, which I don't see as being a huge problem at all. It truly is the best and the safest!

its all i use since most of mine see kitchen/food prep time... Like ya said its cheap and a little goes along way! Havent noticed excessive dust or gunk on mine

I agree with you Mr. Capt. Carl. I have Been using Mineral Oil For Years. On Machete made Of all Hicarbon Steel. Sometimes who knows what steel fom Junk yard In Mexico. Rusts easily, But Mineral Oil os Good and will Stop rust. and is Food safe so I could Chop Fruit or vegatable with said Machete and it is Ok to Still eat.

Now I use it on My regular Knife Collection because of it's food safe propertias,(I use a Lot in Kitchen) and the rest of what you said is absolutely correct.

I'm going to have to pick up one of those precision oilers. Thanks for the idea!

Y'welcome.

ebay has a bunch of precision oilers but this seemed to give the most bang for the buck (and no, I'm not the seller or a shill for him).

I have a hugebbittle of mineral oil I use for wiping down my blades, but I have never tried I as lubrication.

When you say you use for lubrication, do you mean on a folder pivot or spedsafe torsion bar or the like? Or just as a protective coating for the blades?

I think it works better than rem oil with teflon I bought. It's all I will use anymore. Food safe is a huge plus. Mineral oil is so cheap it's almost free!

Affirmative! I use it on the joints of my slipjoints and i suppose you could use it anywhere you use any other lube

I too love mineral oil for all of my knife needs.
The folks in the Himalayan Imports forum got me using it back in 2001, I think, and I have used it ever since for my main blade lube/preservitive. I also use it on my cutting boards at home.
I actually added a 1 oz bottle of clove oil to 32 oz of mineral oil. Mainly for the nice scent it adds to the oil, plus it seems to cling better IMHO. That could just be in my mind though.;)

I've been looking for a good lube/protectant recently, and after seeing this thread went to check out mineral oil. I remember seeing it in drugstores. Sure enough, there it was, in the laxatives section -- "Heavy Mineral Oil". Is this the stuff for knives, or do you guys get another variety at the hardware store? The "heavy" part makes me uncertain... and also that it's a laxative.

And about the clove oil -- they sell it just a few feet down the aisle from the mineral oil. ArchAngel, is this how you came about using this combo?

KMN,

Clove oil has been used as a preservative in Japan for centuries on Japanese sword maintenance. Though the problem with it is its rather costly compared to mineral oil. A lot of Japanese sword practioners here in the States have used mineral oil but felt they were missing something tradtional.

I dunno who came up with it, but, Don Fogg suggested this to me over a decade ago when I spoke with him at a show. It seemed like a happy medium for keeping with the traditional aspect and cutting down on cost. A few drops of Clove oil in a bottle of mineral oil really saves money in the long run. As ArchAngel said, it smells really nice too.

Lucky for you, you can find it in a drugstore. I can't seem to find any here as there seems to be no demand for the stuff. Yes, the stuff you find in a drug store is the same stuff a lot of guys use here.

Interesting tidbit about the clove oil. Maybe I'll try it if I come across it one day and it isn't too expensive. I DO love the smell of clove!

mineral oil is all i use on my folders, and fixed blades,,,never will i ever use anything else

I used to use olive oil. It worked just fine. Mineral oil lasts longer, no smell, food safe, I LOVE IT!

I got this at DX and it works great with mineral oil. It's cheap too. Shipping is free. I'm gonna get a couple more for other oils.
