Mineral oil

I use the heavy mineral oil, the kind sold in the laxative section as an "intestinal lubricant". If you're going to be using the knife on food, then mineral oil is a safe choice with reasonably good lubricant properties. If you're not worried about use on food, there are lubricants that work much better. Militec-1 and Tuff Glide are two options popular around here, both lube better than mineral oil, and they keep the pivot dry and cleaner.

Hmmmmm..... At least we know that Joe has no "regularity" problems. ;) :p Hehehehehehehehe

I do not find mineral oil to be a very good lubricant. It is an oil product and it traps grit, dirt and dust and has to be cleaned out and re-applied often. My recommendation for a great lubricant for knives is Militec 1. This is the best that I have found to date. I prefer it to White Lightning.

There are some rumors that Militec 1 contains Chlorine. This would be highly corrosive to knife blades. If a product contains more than a minute amount of Chlorine it must be listed in the product's Material Safety Data Sheet. Chlorine is not listed in the MSDA for Militec 1. That means that if it does contain any Chlorine, it is such a small amount as to inconsequential.

As mentioned by KWM, the oil tends to attract dirt and dust...not to mention the mess. :barf:

I recommend the Sentry Solutions Tuf-Glide.:D

The guys down at the local knife shop swear by BreakFree, I just use a weapons lube from crappytire. It's only $5-6 for a small bottle, only a drop or two is needed.

I do however use Mineral Oil on my blades. I use any of the accessable ones for cooking, so they all get it(all accessable)...

I use mineral oil on my ivory and bone handles to keep them from drying out and cracking.

Yitz, that is a very good use for mineral oil. I soak my knives with horn or stag handles for 24 hours in mineral oil once a year. When the knives are taken out I clean them off and then let them dry. Once dry, I apply Ren Wax to hold the oil in and help preserve these beautiful materials. If I had any knives with ivory or bone I would do the same to them.
