Mineral oil?

I've heard that mineral oil can be used to aid in rust resistance, and it's certainly an attractive option considering how cheap it is. Does anyone here have experience with it? What's the general process for oiling a knife with it?

Moved to Maintenance.

Mineral oil is good stuff. I keep a small bottle of the food grade m.o. on my kitchen counter. I use it on any carbon steel knives. like my Jarvenpaa leuku and puukko set, and a GEC sunfish. It's also good on wooden cutting boards and dishes, mugs, and utensils.

You can smear a little on by hand, just watch your fingers near the edge. If you like, you can use a paper towel wadded up to apply it, instead.

Specifically, I'm about using it 8Cr13MoV and VG-10 just to make sure they remain rust-free...good plan, then?

I can't tell those Chinese steels apart so I don't know what they need. I have a Spyderco VG-10 I use in the kitchen that doesn't need oiling. Wash and dry. But the oil won't hurt and it is good if you leave the blade lying around sometimes before cleaning it.

it's also good if you have micarta or g 10 handles, just put that stuff on them, and your good to go, just make sure to wash your hands afterwords, as Esav said, get the food grade, the other kind acts as a laxative if ingested...

As a bonus, you can use the mineral oil to keep natural handle materials in excellent shape. I use it on pearl, ivory, stag, ect.

Mineral oil sold as a laxative IS food grade since you are supposed to drink it. And it takes a lot more oil than you can get on your blade or hands to have any effect on your digestive system.

I buy mineral oil in the pharmacy section of most stores as it is used as a laxative, as mentioned. I don't think either of those blade steels will need anything for rust since they are stainless and the first time you cut something you will wipe off the protection for the most part. MO can be used on the pivot as well if you use your knife on food so there is no toxicity worry with other lubes.
