my Tuff Cloth is drying out a bit, the directions say to refresh it with odorless mineral spirits. (A Google search said it was a type of paint thinner) Do you guys just buy a new Tuff Cloth, or do you have a can of mineral spirits around and reapply? Or are there other ingredients in the Tuff Cloth that would warrant just purchasing a new one? Also heard that some just apply mineral oil.

Dunno about tuff cloths, but mineral spirits is going to be just about any paint thinner you buy that isn't labled "turpentine."

I can't imagine that mineral oil would be the same or equivalent or have a similar effect. Mineral oil and mineral spirits are chemically and physically very different fluids.

Never heard of using mineral oil and cant imagine it would work. Using mineral spirits can add life to the cloth, The cloth it's self is impregnated with the "dry" that are Tuf Glide, Adding the liquid to it just brings them out again. At some point I am sure the cloth will wear out and/or the Tuf Glide will be used up but you should be able to refresh the cloth quite a few times.

I think I have added mineral spirits to mine 3-4 times now and it seems to still be working. Some people will also buy a small bottle of Tuf Glide and just add a few extra drops to the cloth from time to time.

Tuf Glide is a dry lubricant/preservative, I don't think using mineral oil would allow the Tuf Glide to dry out on what you used it on.

I have never added mineral spirits. I just bought two bottles of Tuff-Glide and squirt some on the cloth. Seal it back in the pouch and shake around. I love the stuff, and might be addicted to it. I'd buy the cologne if they made it. LMAO

haha, I thought I was the only weird one. I only have a few knives, a Buck 110, a Cabela's 110, a 112, Alpha Hunter and a Rat Trap, but I've been wiping them down everyday. (Hope that smell aint toxic, dont need to kill off anymore brain cells, don't have many to spare) Something about the smell combined with the shiny wet finish it seems to temporarily provide. :)

You can buy mineral spirits in a can at Home Depot or Lowe's - fairly inexpensive. You can use it for lots of things.

It is nothing like mineral oil.

Also, Tuf Glide is a lubricant, not a solvent - I'm sure it works, but probably in a different way.

Mineral Oil is exactly that, an oil that is typically food grade and was at one time used as a laxative (Haley's M.O.).

Mineral spirits would be toxic to drink but is a solvent. My guess is that Tuff Glide is a dry lubricant and mineral spirits is the solvent that it "rides" in. When you apply it to the metal, the mineral spirits would eventually dissipate leaving a microscopic coating of the "Tuff Glide".

The mineral spiritsa is what gives the Tuff Glide cloth the "wet" feeling and by adding a little back to the dry cloth, you are simply replacing the mineral spirits that have evaporated after time. At some point, I would think that most of the Tuff Glide has been left on metals and it would be time to simply purchase a new Tuff Glide cloth or reactivate it by wetting it down with the Tuff Glide liquid.

Hopefully I just clarified rather than muddied the answer. :D

Don't use mineral oil on the Tuff Cloth! Use mineral spirits or even better, invest in a bottle of Tuff Glide and use that and your Tuff Cloth will last forever. ;)

yeah, i do have Tuff Glide, and reapply, ...was just wondering about adding some mineral spirits to it,...and how vital it is. I guess since it's a solvent, it helps clean the knife?
