Mineral Spirits?

How does mineral spirits affect knife blade coatings and handles? The reason I ask is because Tuff-Cloth contains mineral spirits and I was curious if, over time, the mineral spirits would eat through any blade coatings or handles such as Micarta, G-10 or Zytel.
Also, how long does a Tuff-Cloth last?
Any info. will be appreciated.
Thanks!!

I've been using Tuf-Glide to coat most of my knives since last year, and there was no effect on the blade coatings, or on the handles (mostly G10 and Zytel). Not sure about Micarta though, as I don't have one with those as handle material.

Tuff-Cloth will last for a long time, as long as you reseal it in its plastic bag after using. Can also be recharged with mineral spirits, or Tuff-Glide.

I think Mark of Sentry Solutions is just lurking around, and will probably add more to these.

Mineral spirits won't "eat though" the finish or handles. It's a carrier (solvent) for the coating in Tuff-Cloth. After you wipe it on, the mineral spirits evaporate. What's left behind is the coating, not mineral spirits. It won't do any damgae because it's only there for a few minutes. Hope this helps.

There are only two types of people; those who understand this, and those who think they do.

Mineral spirits is made of volitile petroleum distillates. G10, zytel, and most blade coatings are impervious to petroleum distillates in general. I'm not sure about micarta as it will soak up petroleum distillates. I don't think mineral spirits will harm micarta since it evaporate rapidly. Even the capillery action in micarta is unlikely to retain it for very long.

This reminds me of a post over in the knife testing forum. I think it was Cliff Stamp who took a micarta handled knife, basically soaked the handle in gasoline, and tried lighting it off. Well, of course it lit, but the gasoline burned away quickly (imagine that

), the handle remained intact, and was nicely warm for working outside in the cold winter air.

Hello,

Micarta does not SOAK up Petroleum Distilates,,,,,(as Cliff Stamp discovered)

Surface Tension on micarta is alot different than it Soaking through the material.

Dont go by the Old Article in FIGHTING KNIVES magazine on Handle material Selection, It was Self Serving for the Author, and flawed at best.

Tuff CLoth has always worked and never Harmed
anything i applied it too.
