O.K. not to sound completely dense, but what the heck are Mineral Spirits? Are they cheaper than a bottle of tuf-glide? Can I get them at Home Depot or Lowes? What is the actual Manufacturers name who makes them? Any info would help.

Spirits of dead Stones.

Actually its paint thinner around here. Check the contents of paint thinner and I beleive it will say made from 100% mineral spirits. Petroleum based, I believe.

"Mineral Spirits" is a naptha of the "stoddard solvent" type which has a minimum of greasy ends. It is listed by the NFPA as a Class II flammable liquid. Among other uses it's primary use is as a paint thinner for alkyd paints and as a degreasing solvent.

There are numerous brand names. . .

You can purchase "Tuf-Glide" and dilute it with "Mineral Spirts."

Mineral spirits sounds kind of toxic. You can get "mineral oil" which is a laxative at the drugstore or supermarket for about a buck for a good sized bottle. It is not toxic (although you wouldn't want to swallow too much of it) and it works extremely well on protecting blades against rust. Particularly useful if you use your knife for food prep.

Mineral spirits and mineral oil are two totally different things. You can use mineral spirits to refresh your Tuf-cloth. Don't try using mineral oil.

Just wanted to clarify that for any out there that might have been confused.

Thanks for the advise Ed ! I generally get my "laxative" enjoyment via a "Eminem". . .

Ooopps ~ "Eminem" is that CRAP singer. . . Oh well. . .laxative ~ Eminem. . .same thing !

You can only "reactivate" a Tuff Cloth with mineral spirits a few times at most. IME, bottom line is once the cloth starts to dry, you really need to add some Tuf Glide. I' ve been thru dozens of these cloths and the mineral spirits only make it smell like mineral spirits! Otherwise a fine product.
