Hi all,

I am looking out for a stout axe that could blow some small trees but still good enough for some finer work.Something between a hatchet and and axe.

Does anyone here has good experience on this? The one from Council tool looks fine but i'm also looking at the one from True Temper.

Thank you for your inputs.

A Hudson bay pattern would allow you to really choke up and get your hand right behind the blade for finer work. There are lots of options from Council, Gransfors etc, but I think they are all lighter than the miner's axes you are looking at. I have seen a few Collins 3.5lb Hudson bay pattern heads on the bay recently. One of those fitted to a 28inch handle might work for you if you want the heavier head weight.

trailmaker makes some good points. but, I don't think you do want that heavier head weight if you're going to so any close/fine work. I'd recommend something along the lines of a carpenter's axe, or a small hudson bay axe like trailmaker said. both could come in at around 18-20 inch in length. not ideal for felling a tree, but are certainly do-able if you're not talking about a tree much over say 4 or 5 inches in diameter.

if you're talking about trees larger than that, I say get something akin to the european (gransfors, wetterlings, husky, etc) forest axes in a 25 or 26 inch length. the council boys axe would also be a good choice here, too. you'll want the added handle length when felling. all these would still be usable for close work, esp. with the lighter head weights they provide.

but, my vote resides with the mid-length choices : carpenter's axe (I love my wetterlings) or small hudson bay (I also love my council).

What you need is a 2.5 lb head on an 18 inch straight handle (miner) that is really sharp. Can pound away with it, then if needed, get up close and personal with whatever you have. At least that is what I imagine when you throw miners axe in the mix.

Check out this one, I don't own one but maybe someone here does. Looks like a good choice. Probably need some strong forearms to get after it with this one.

I own a Barco cruiser db which is an outstanding axe imo good steel good handle. Not sure how this one is finished you might need to put a working edge on it. Looks like it's US made and the price aint bad either.

different companies. Barco = US company, Bahco=Euro tools

BJP,
It can't be the sister family of Sandvik, can it? As what i know Bahco was bought over by Snap-on Tools , a US company.
I'm looking for a Jersey pattern with the phantom bevel/tapered cheeks but it seems only the old Kelly/True Temper model has it.
The phantom bevel on the current production aren't significant enough.

guess it could be a sister company, but I see nothing to indicate it is.
http://www.barcotools.com/ look at the catalog, and you'll see the Kelly woodslasher series and others

not sure who makes what you're looking for other than the ones you've already eliminated. sorry.
