I got married on the 21st, and when I was snagging some extra hiking gear for the honeymoon, a 112 caught my eye. $30, sheath and all, and I'd wanted one... so I grabbed it. It, along with a Ka-Bar Short, were my only 2 knives for a week of hiking and rockscrambling, so I'd say the review has some teeth. :)

With no further ado:

Sharpness Out-of-box sharpness was among the best I have ever seen in a folder, and easy to maintain. Shaved out of the box, held pretty well, came back full strength with a couple licks on a medium Norton. Grade: A+

Ergonomics This knife fits my hand like a glove. Oversized front bolster sits perfectly on my index finger, and the blade has just the right angle for aggressive cuts. Grade: A

Fit and finish Excellent, with one caveat. The closing was initially slow, but was remedied with soap and water cleaning. After that, it opened smooth and snapped loudly. No gaps, no visible pin cracks, no imperfections I can see. Grade: A

Sheath This is the one area for improvement. Initially, it was overly tight, requiring soaking and reforming for easy use. In addition, it also scratches very easily, leaving me with two large scrapes from a fall that didn't so much as redden the elbow I landed on. Retention is great, however, and overall function is unaffected. Grade: B+

Overall grade: 3.90, A. Excellent knife, though the sheath could be better.

Cool review.
Thanks.
What type of tasks did you use it for?
Did you find that you used it more, or less, than the Ka-Bar?
Is the Ka-Bar clip or tanto point?

yes i feel the same as goose...;)
very good review !

It was used for lots of random things- fuzz sticks, general whittling, box breakdown and the like. The K, clip point and convex by the way, was more a kitchen knife and a "Just-in-case" knife when wandering through the hills.

You took *boxes* on a honeymoon in the woods???

Never mind...

I probably would have taken Hostess Cupcakes, Almond Joys, wavy potato chips, Slim Jims, rye bread, cherry tomatoes, ice cream sandwiches...hmmmm...seems to be time for dinner... :o

:p That was more for opening wedding gifts before we left. :)

Vienna sausages, SPAM, Dinty Moore stew, Dennison's or Stagg chili...

Nice review

I've picked up a 112 in the exchange not long ago, and I don't want to put it down. The fit and finish was excellent, and it is the perfect size for me.

I gotta stay out of these threads!

I think about how nice 112's are....I goofing around type Buck 112 into google..and now have one of these ordered.

I need help.... :D

I've always liked how the 112 feels in the hand. The original with the squared-off edges felt pretty good, but the modern rounded version has the best feel in the hand (to me) of any folder on the market.

I only got my first 112 last Christmas when Wally world had them in the tins....now I have 8 of them......I have about 35 110s but I do like the 112s alot now.....The last Confederate, where did you order that stag model from ? It looks nice...perhaps another one is in order.....lol

Does Buck still receiving order on customizing their knives, like asking this beauty with BG-42 steel? Cheers!

Omaha is right, New Graham has them, I didn't see them there before I ordered, I searched under "112LE", and New Graham has them as "112STSLE".

Dang, I thought they were out so I ordered it somewhere else. :(

Mine was ordered from www.ambientweather.com.

Yeah the 112 is great. I love the 110 but the 112 fits me better. I wish Buck would offer the 112 in their "Build your own custom knife" section on their website.
