I just got my first Emerson, a Mini A-100. I'm curious, what is the secondary detent for? I guess it sort of balances out the side load of the liner lock while the blade is closed, keeping it more centered, but when the blade is opened, it just side loads the tang for no reason I can determine.

The lockbar's detent ball only functions to minimize the drag from opening and closing the blade. The one on the non-lockbar liner is the one that is responsible for keeping the knife closed. indepentend spring force settings if you will. Stronger closed detent without a overly strong lockbar spring force/tension.

Emerson did it this way to regulate the tension of the two independently. The amount of tension with the closed detent has changed over the years as the liner of that side changed in material and thickness. It is known as the Safe-D-Tent.
