Just wondering what everyone thinks of this one. I have never owned a 50/50 and was wondering what the BM serrations are like. They look a bit different than the spydie pattern. Is a 50/50 too awkward or do the serrations actually come in handy?

i have a AFCK with a regular edge, and a mini with a 50/50 - its ok, i just cant sharpen those serrations very well, not that they need it really(not mine yet anyway). personally i prefer the regular edge, i use that 1 more anyway.

I'd go with the plain edge. I've got a mini-AFCK combo edge that I bought because I got a good deal on it and every time I use it I wish I had just spent a few extra dollars & got it plain edge instead. Very good knife though.

Just yesterday, some forumite posted somewhere that he won't buy a combo blade unless it is at least 4" long. Otherwise both sections seem to small. Makes a lot of sense to me.

I have 2 combo edges -- CRKT M16-14 and Spydie Walker Ltwt. I very rarely intentionally use the serrations. They don't bother me at all on the M16. They get in my way frequently on the litle Walker.

My $.02 worth.

I went through a phase where EVERY piece I purchased and planned to use, HAD to have serrations...NOT THE CASE ANYMORE!!!

Although you rarely have to sharpen the serrations on most good pieces these days- MT, Spydie, BM, CS-if you have ever had to, you already know that it is a pain in the butt. I have TRIED time and time again to sharpen my large serrated Spydies and my AFCK, and it is TOO rough! I simply ship my Spydies back to them, pay a few bucks, and get them back in perfect working order.

Benchmade only sharpens their plain edge knives under their LIFE SHARP policy. They do a good job, but I have three little BM's with 50/50 setup that have a razor sharp plain edge, and a nasty row of teeth.

My AFCK's have been put thru the ringer...all serrated and used for EVERYTHING...saw wood, cut open cans of beans, cutting barbed-wire...EVERYTHING. Because of this "abuse" I figure it not wise to send back to BM, so i sharpen them on my own. TRI-ANGLE by Spydie gets them to an acceptable level of sharpness, no where near where they are when they are brand new.

Here's what to do...By and carry a plain edge AND a fully serrated edge knife. I have carried a full serrated Police model, with a BM 705 on my other side for situations JUST like this one!

At one time I always had the part serrated blades on me. Now I've seen the light and always go with the plain edge...cause I can't sharpen the serrations. Unfortunately, I sometimes need serrations. My solution, much like DANGELO's, is to carry two knives. My choice, however, was to buy a Spyderco Navigator. It fits in the coing pocket of my jeans...or clips inside the waistband of other pants. I don't even know it's there...and...it's a great cutter.

My 812 is the plain edge model in M2. IMHO in a smaller blade like this serrations are a bad thing. Unless cutting fibreus materials will be a very important part of the knife useage, go for the plain edge.

The knife suffers from moving off centre and liner scraping (just like my 800 did). Now you can bend the blade in the other direction and loosen and re-tighten the pivot to put the blade back and centred. I think it is simply down to excessive scale flex. The blade is not being held rigid enough and I use a little sideways push when opening my blades, thus it moves over bit by bit. I am sure if you ask around you will find this a common problem as one formite but it "common as mosquitoes in a swamp" or words to that effect!

It is a very good little knife however, if you can accept this little issue! Same goes for the larger model, both good knives but QC and design flaws IMHO.
