Hey Christof have ya thought about maybe doing a 5" bladed version of your Alaskan for use as a kitchen knife, maybe with even thinner stock !

Pit --

The stock wouldn't need to be thinner: it's already about the same thickness as my Global Chef's knife. The grind could start even higher though. I also like big chef's knives. A 10" Chef is my favorite kitchen knife, followed closely by a big Chinese-style cleaver. If anything, for kitchen use, I'd make a bigger Alaskan.

I used to be a small knife guy, what has happened to me?

LOL ! Give it a month or so and you may turn 180 again, I usually do !

I just htink that even my 1/8" stock knives appear quite thick nowdays, is your Alaskan 1/8"?

1/8". I mean I haven't mic'd it, but 1/8" seems right. I agree though, a 5/32" knife seems fat...not phat...anymore.

huh. The alaskan is in some sense an outgrowth of the model1 and model 2 designs, and I've done some drop edged knives in 5 inches, but not with the straight angled spine and such.

I'll be making a few, then. Have to see about final edge profile for a slightly reduced handle rise, to keep te balance all together. I think I'll have to work on that a bit.

okay, so this is more of a spearpoint, but.....

That one is actually for sale:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=692095

The details are:

Blade is .095 thick 15N20 steel with a differential temper and a vinegared finish. 1 3/8 inches broad at the top of the thumbramp. Blade length is 4 inches, edge length is 3 15/16 inches. Overall the knife is 8 1/8 inches long.

Handle profile is set at a slight angle giving better clearance to the hand. Scales are english walnut, with 1/4 inch stainless pin and 7/32 ID stainless lanyard tubing rear pin. Thumb ramp is long and gentle, providing a lot of room for extension. Thumb ram jimping is deep and secure, but gentle.

Blade grind is a tapered saber grind with a convex microbevel.

Sheath is fully waterformed, double needle hand stitched, ranger style- the horizontal loop holds the bottom of the belt loop. Classy look and prevents the blade from cutting the belt loop stitching.

I got to handle that knife at the Reno Gun Show. It was a toss up between that and the knife I did purchased. It is an excellent knife.

I'm not sure if Christof has me on his list for one of these or not. I know I've hinted a few times that I could use one, but he's been distracted lately. Regardless, that baby is a beauty even if it is demanding; well done.

Post some user pics so the rest of us can be envious....
