Noticed these come in two different steels and wondered which one is more sought after?

They are both equal I would say...
ATS-34 (japan)was used until Buck started using the american version of ATS-34 which is 154CM. Both metals are very close to the same.
Buy whichever one you can get your hands on, they will hold the same edge and stay just as sharp as the other. Some prefer the USA version (154CM), but I have used both with no problems. Good luck

Thanks for the info ION. Would this apply to the Alpha Dorado as well? I noticed the newer ones are 154CM.

They started doing this a while back.
"Effective Jan. 2006, Buck Knives will be changing the ATS-34 steel used in some of its knives to 154CM"
