Mini-com Question

I have a 2002 mini-com that I recently received in a trade. I love this knife and it's been in my pocket everyday. Yesterday I noticed that there is a bit of vertical blade play. Not really a biggie for me except that the liner lock is moving too. Twice, while moving the blade, I got it to close. Mostly, it will only move about the width of the liner, which puts it on the very edge of the blade. I was thinking about sending it in, but the previous owners had the the blade ground to get rid of the chisel grind. Will this effect the warranty? Oh, and the grind was well done and looks great, not just some shoddy job.
Thanks

Give EKI a call and tell them exactly what the problem is. I am confident that they will look after the issue.

This. ^
Although, a bud just had the same problem but as the knife broke in the blade wobble stopped.

Have you taken it apart and thoroughly cleaned it? I would suggest that.

That's actually why I noticed the wobble. I used the knife to slice up fresh pineapple for lunch while at work. I didn't have time to clean it right then. By time I got home the blade was very sticky ( who'd a thought). Anyways, I took the blade and bushings out ( I didn't completely disassemble the knife) and cleaned it all. That's when I noticed the movement, I don't think I checked this when I got the knife.

Is the whole scale moving or is it just the blade moving causing the lock to slip off of the blade. And by vertical play to you mean up and down or side to side? Are you 100% sure that both bushings are in there? Can you post some pics?

greetings,
had the same thing happen to me on my commander and a cqc-15. both in un-used condition. open the blade and move them up/down. both had the liner-lock start to close. i'm not talking spine-whacking [which makes no sense anyway] but just minor pressure. like the liner lock slips off the blade. anybody else? best regards.

This fixed it. As mentioned earlier, when I first cleaned the knife I only pulled the blade, pivot and washers. I just finished tearing the knife down completely. While the liners were dirty from the pineapple and lint, I didn't see anything else. But that must have been the problem. Everything is back together now and it's as solid as can be.
Thank you everyone for your input.

You are confusing the bevel with the edge. The knife is sharpened on one side only, a chisel edge. A true chisel grind would what you see on the CQC-7 and CQC-6. I've left all my Emerson knives with the same edge. It really is sharper that way, like the razors you shave with.

Actually no, this one has had the chisel edge removed and the blade is sharpened on BOTH sides. It came this way from a trade.

Emerson customer service rocks. I sent a Mini Commander in for the same issue. Got a bigger stop pin and new lock bar side. Good as new after that.

I have noted some similar problems on my full size Commander. I successfully got the blade to close with moderate pressure. I also successfully have a 2" cut on my hand :0). Cleaning does seem to help with keeping the lock bar where it should be.

EKI will take care of you. Unlike some companies, they don't seem to look for excuses to void your warranty. They've really been a pleasure to deal with. I've had multiple knives looked at. All came back promptly repaired.

I have heard many good things about Emerson's cs. But, after 3 of their knives ( planning on more),I have yet to need it.
