It was just requested that I map the Crusader Cross onto the Mini Commander platform... so I spent the morning doing just that. Once I had the machining files all coded up for the typical black scales with white shield and red cross I began to play with the three colors to arrive at variations on the theme... all are doable... but some variations just aren't that appealing.

Awesome as always man. Your scales are amazing. Have you ever done any scales that don't have a texture and are just smooth and contoured?

Wow!, really cool man. Id like to see how my cqc 7 would look with something like that.

I have... but requests for smooth are rare. Because of the tooling passes required for a smooth rather than textured surface... it would need hand sanding to eliminate mill marks. Texturing is a way to help eliminate mill marks and the required hand sanding.

Fully contoured scales on a mill requires 3D machining. I have the machining software capable of 3D toolpathing... but I'm not familiar with it. I do 2D and 2-1/2D machining. The appearance of a contour on my 2D scales comes from the profile bevel done with a 45 deg v-bit.

I'm currently building a 2X72 grinder which is the better tool to achieve fully contoured smooth scales. Not certain just when I'll have it completed and in operation. It WILL open up an ability to offer a host of additional materials such as Ctek, Juma, Kirinite, carbon fiber, etc.

Steve, you are the best! Thank you so much again for tooling the scales to the mini for me! I have the perfect lanyard to put on my mini when it arrives and top it off with your scales. I really can't wait!

These look awesome! Personally I like the black base color most, then red, white, ehh... I really like the black, with red shield, and black cross.

Daaaaaaaaaaaamn those are nice. If I were to order a set, I'd actually replace the cross with a red medical cross.

So here's the first set of Emerson Mini Commander Crusader Cross scales off the machine... in the typical black G10, white G10 shield, & red G10 cross... I placed the CAD render beneath the actual scales for comparison. When using a round tool to mill inlays and pockets you can not achieve crisp sharp corners that you can in the drawing. You will always have rounding equal to the radius of the end mill bit. I use a .0394" end mill which is the smallest diameter bit I have.

Hey Patrick...! Terrific photo! I'm going to assume the install went well! Great to see the Crusader scales on that black MINI and I think I'm seeing a Mark Mansfield knife burrito. COOL WATCH!!!

Thank you! The watch is a Slow Jo, from europe. 24 hour watch in increments of 15 minutes. And the scales fit perfectly except for the female pivot thing, it was a little hard to get into the scale to put on the liner. But nothing a hammer couldn't fix. lol. I but I am having trouble figuring out how to cut the screws for the pocket clip... I am terrible at machine work and lack tools at my place to do it. lol

A pair of dykes and a small file will do the job. Just be certain to dyke cut the excess screw length about one or two threads longer than needed. Then file the cut end down leaving the end flat or slightly radiused. Of course if you even lack those simple tools... worrying away the unneeded length against a coarse stone might be a bit too stoneage of a suggestion!
