I am trying to find some of the mini compasses that would fit well in an Altoid type of survival kit, and I am needing suggestions on what type, and where to buy them. I may be getting several to make up several kits. I have done a search for the Brunton watchband compass, but thought I would ask you guys what you use and where to get them. Thanks Oh yea, it would be a bonus if it would be suitable for the butt cap of a CRK one piece like the P1 or Shadow 4.

Marbles makes a small compass ( ~ 1/2" diameter) with brass case that is perfect for inlaying. I got mine from bluelineoutfitters.com for $10.00.

Thanks for the replys,

Neanderthal, I can't seem to get that site to come up, anywhere else that you can buy the Marbles?

Alco,

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, but when I clicked over to foxridge, they listed only the pin on and the pocket compass for Marbles, and didn't even allow an order placement or details on the pocket compass. So after my Yahoo search, my Microsoft search and some great suggestions from you guys, I am still searching for a small Marbles or something similar. Let me know if you guys know of any other places to check, and thanks for all of your replys.

Neanderthal,

Really do appreciate the second effort and I will call these guys tommorrow. Thanks again for all of the replys and if anyone has other suggestions, I am wide open.

pkd3: Blueline Outfitters is owned and operated by "Barry". Currently, I'm told, he is building a new home so he may be a little harder to reach. He is wonderful to deal with, spectacular service and very reasonable prices. He carries many "hard to get" items such as those popular on the ETS forums.

Unless you want to spend some bucks getting a good small compass is going to be tough. SASS-Kit has some as well as TAD gear, they are the U.S. link for some Brit gear.
If you want a small compass that work try this:
Take a good compass with you when shopping for a mini. you will need to compare a few to find one that is the most accurate, they all vary a bit. Check out the coleman zipper pull compasses at your local target store or the like in your area. Find the most accurate
compass(s) and buy them, $2.98 ea. The backing will come off an allow you to remove the compass pellet, they are about 3/8 dia. just what you are looking for.<><

Last I heard, Marble's had stopped making the button compass for a "redesign". Supposed to be back in production soon. 'Course, that was a year ago and still no new compass!

Hey guys thanks a bunch,

It looks like I have sure enough tackled a bonafide project, because without buying the SAS from TAD gear, I may be on a hunt for some time.

Neanderthal, thanks again, and it appears you are on the money because the number that you gave me has been disconnected. I would love to have his new info when he gets back to the store. I will give the small compass from the department stores a try and see if I can make that work until something better comes about. I thought Brunton had a mini, but all I can find is the wrist mini. Thanks again

Ben,

Thanks for the tip. I called Gale and he was just great to talk with. The compass that he sells sounds as though it is excellent quality.(he states that they are unconditionally guaranteed for the lifetime of the compass, no matter who owns it) In fact, although it is larger by about a 1/2 inch than what I am looking for, I ordered a few to have and give as gifts. Thanks again for the link, and anybody knows about a decent 1/2 inch or there abouts mini let me know.

Try "Edmund Scientific" online at www.scientificsonline.com
Just type "mini compass" in the search function, although it is a little larger(7/10 inch). If you do, read the description carefully because it also offers a set of 4 compasses which are 1.5 inches dia.
Another thought; if you can go to a slightly larger size, try the Suunto Micro-Compass. It is 1.2 X 1 inch because it's on a small wristband clip. But it is a very good compass and has a rotating bezel marked in degrees so you can shoot a bearing. While I keep a smaller unit in one of my psk's, I consider this small Suunto as the backup to my primary compass(a Suunto MC-2DL Navigator).

Good Luck;
Mith.

bensano,

I recieved a few of the Tru-Nord compasses today, and there is no doubt that the brass case of the compass is really strong. I am impressed with the apparent quality of this compass and believe Gayle at Tru-Nord has good reason to offer his unconditional guarantee. Thanks for the tip, and if we could only talk him to making a clone of this unit about 1/2 diameter of this one, we would have one high quality guaranteed micro compass.

Bnk,

Thanks for this link very much. I will order a couple of these and see how they look. It appears they may be just fine for my needs.
