mini-covert vs. small point guard.

Ok, here's the deal: I need a small knife for the office, that satisfies several criteria:

- clip set up for pretty deep, inconspicuous carry
- should be a liner-lock, for easy one-hand closing (definitely not a lockback as I have a SS dragonfly now and the lockback factor is annoying)
- not be too bulky,
- provide a very secure grip
- blade not over 3", preferably around 2.75"
- cost around $30
- also, it should look nice, for office carry, so my plan is to replace the scales with wood or micarta scales. So a Delica or small Vapor won't do the trick.

Both the mini-covert & the small point guard seem to satisfy these criteria. So I have 2 questions:
(1) am I missing any other options?
(2) what are y'all's experiences with these knives, and if possible has anyone experienced both to be able to compare them?

As always, thanks for the intel - FF

(let the torrent of people suggesting I spend 3x as much begin!)

GB - I think the M16 EDC might look a little too tactical, with its dagger-blade. why do you prefer the PG over the mini-covert, what factors guide your choice? Tx - FF

The Mini Covert by Gerber doesn't feel right in my hands. Steels are about the same. (not THAT great, but 1/2 decent) Quality, I prefer CRKTs normally. The Crawford Kasper is pretty popular, but it is a bit bulky

Forgot to mention, go HANDLE the knife yourself! I have relatively short fingers and medium hands

How about a Kershaw Double Duty. It's more than $30 and doesn't have a clip but it does come with nice wood scales and is as innocuous as a two-bladed pen knife. Both blades have thumb studs and are liner-locked. Great knife and very "anti-tactical".

wait, now I'm confused. Gerber lists the mini covert as 154 CM, but AG Russel has it as AUS 6. If it is infact 154 CM, it's a better bargin.

well, it just occurred to me that the mini-covert has only one nested liner, right? So I can't just replace zytel scales with wood ones, like I can with the sm. point guard?

The Mini Covert is not 154CM, it's AUS-6. If I had to pick, I would go for the Covert as I like the blade shape and handle symmetry much more than the Point Guard. However, both are great knives and I would suggest handling them both if you get the chance.

Lockbacks are kinda hard to close single handed. Also, does the Gerber have a liner interlock?

I have a Large CRKT Point Guard that I ordered upon handling the small version. One main reason: it felt so solid and action was smooth for such a small knife, so i think the large version would too .. (which is true)

Steel (AUS6) is ok, easy to sharpen. Plus, the LAWKS helps to ensure the already solid liner locking. And yes, you'd be definitely able to change the scale as it is dual liner (full liner)

No experience with mini covert .. no comment.

Garageboy,
I have to disagree but to avoid the risk of derailing a post, I'll let it go. ;)

My SS Dragonfly is a real pain to close one-handed, it's just awkward, but I think that's because of its small size (no such problem with a Calypso Jr., say). BUT it's also true that lockbacks make a louder "smack" when the lock engages, then the quiet "snick" of a linerlock. Since I'm looking for a small and unobtrusive knife, appearance, ease of opening and closing, and quietness of operation are all important to me. Basically, I started a new job (finally!) and I don't want to freak people out.

Sure wish I could find examples of either of these knives to handle at local knife shops, but no luck so far.

Side note - after checking tone of ads, the mini-covert is variously advertised as having an AUS6A, 154CM, and 525 (??????) blade. But all sell for the same price. Most odd.
