Seriously considering building my own custom 20cv Mini Crooked River in Benchmade's custom shop. I don't care what its costs (WAY too much lol). It LOOKS like it'd be an awesome edc knife. I've heard mixed reports of minor blade play issues. Anyone have extended experience with these? Does the axis lock "settle in" strong? Or do they develop worse play over time? I know its hit or miss usually with Benchmade. Just wanted to see what current owners of this knife think.

Love my mini crooked river. No blade play to report.

I have also played with a 20cv custom build. If I didn’t already have the S30V version i might have sprung for it. But in my uses, either blade steel is fine. Would love to hear how the custom experience goes, once you get it.

I've only bought one knife from the custom shop (Grip). I ended up spending even more money on some custom scales from DoAT. It is still one of my favorite knives, even though I could have bought three plain grips by the end of my spending spree. It is personalized to my liking, and for that, it is priceless.

I used BM's online customize page to order, and BM sent me emails as the knife was being worked on and completed. That helped increase my patience. In the end, I would suggest that if you are looking at price/performance ratio or if you sell or trade your knives after a time, you probably won't make your money back. If you want a personalized knife and don't mind spending extra to get the specs you want, go for it. I do suggest handling whatever knife you want customized in store so you know whether you want that overall package.

I got a dozen or so axis knives. not the mini only the regular crooked river. in my experiences some axis lock up tight from the getgo and stay that way even under normal cutting use. some are a bit sloppy or loose and never get any tighter and likewise never much looser. they are safe though and that matters more for using. if you get a looser one BM warranty will take care of it.

They either come tight or have that small micro play in them, they don't get any worse even after years of use. The only time the vertical play will get worse is if you spine wack the hell out of it causing the axis bar to dent the liners that support the axis bar. But you'd have to be an idiot to do that. Use it without worry or abuse and it'll stay as is forever.

It's great. One of my most carried pieces.
I personally don't have any bladeplay, but it's a Benchmade, so the possibility is always there.
