mini Cyclone framelock

Should I assume that the mini cyclone is not available with the frame lock anymore? Is the frame lock better than the linerlock? Seems to me most of the most collectable kershaws have had the framelock. (boron leek, rainbow leek etc.)
Thanks.

Last I checked, th MC was still in a frame lock. Dunno why you would ask to be honest. They have been frame lock since the begining I am pretty sure.

As for which is better, well, like my sig line says, if a liner lock is done right, then it is just as good as a frame lock. In general, framelocks are better, but Kershaw has great liner and frame locks in general.

May I ask how you heard of a non-framelock mini cyclone?

Well, the frame lock is the presumed better of the two locks- the idea being that the actual frame of the knife is holding the blade in place rather than a liner placed on the inside of the blade frame.
I haven't had any problems with liner locks other than the one on the Blur I've just purchased not quite working right. It doesn't snap under the blade 100%, and makes a scraping noise when being unlocked- not sure if it's something that will work itself out with use, or if it's something I will have to take up with customer service. This is also a knife that due to it's limited run wouldn't see EDC by anyone who knew it was a limited production.
My other knives with liner locks- I've had absolutely no reason to believe that they'd give, in any situation. Some people swear by frame locks, but I can't count myself among them.

Actually, the Titanium handled ZDP 189 steel Mini Cyclone was a framelock, and yes, those are quite hard to come by. Just keep an eye on the bay. The standard production mini cyclone is a liner lock, but it's a good one. Never had a bit of trouble with mine.

Good luck cataract!:D

Thanks, Jonny..
I'm not too worried about it, but it's an issue that keeps popping up when I think about buying a new knife from the same "species".
Since I've got your attention- have you had any problems with a Blur's liner lock sticking (not locking completely under the blade) and making a rather unnatural loud scraping noise when being released?
It's on my DLC blue Blur, so I haven't "broke it in", so to speak- keeping it as close as new for the grandkids or whoever gets it willed to them.

hmm, i could have sworn that the reg cys were frame lock JM. oh well. were you talking about the ZDP MC or the regular one sockeye?

I was considering the current production mini cyclone, But I ran across a picture in the picture thread of a frame lock Mini owned by vasili (?), which is probably the titanium version afore mentioned .

I think the liner lock is a great lock never ever had a issue on any of spydies i have had with it. just thought I might be missing out on something.

In a similar vein, whats the consensus on the stud lock as found on the speed and spec bumps.

My short to buy list is either the mini cyclone or the cyclone or the speed bump (aluminum handle version).

the one that vassilli posted was the Ti/ZDP version, so yeah, it is a frame lock. those babies are hard to find.

as for the stud lock, it is a VERY secure lock. i have the speed bump you mentioned, and it is a VERY solid knife all around. you wont be disapointed by any means with it. the cyclones are excellent also, but i would hunt around for the Ti/ZDP ones if you can find them

The aluminum handled Speed Bump is a great knife at any price. The stud lock is really solid and easy to use. You really can't go wrong with it.

mine just came today. looking forward to giving it a good workout then possibly sending it to STR for a tip up low rider :)

Far be it for Me to question kershaws decision to do so , Why not continue making the cyclone with a frame lock? Seems like the R&D had already been done, why switch back to the liner lock? Cheaper? More reliable? OR a "carrot on the end of a stick" to re implement later for those of us that MUST have the latest version?

The zdp version of the cy looks like a great knife!

ZDP is a great steel. Holds an edge for an incredible amount of time, but you had better have something a little tougher than a Sharpmaker, or be prepared to spend a lot of time sharpening it. I think the only other drawback to it is the price, and that's why Kershaw did just a sprint run of it in the Leeks and Mini Cyclones.

When you're using this grade of steel, a titanium frame lock is a given! Not to crack on other handle materials, but putting a ZDP blade on anything other than Ti would be like putting ketchup on a 2 inch thick rare fillet, or adding Coke to your Macallan

I've got a few Cyclones, minis, full-sized, plain, coated, serrated and dressed in ZDP. The standard models give you a lot of bang for your buck. $ 55 is easier for some than $ 140, which is about the going rate for a MC TIZDP new and in excellent condition.

If you find a MC TIZDP NIB jump on it...or send me an email! They're harder to find than hens lips. And if you ever see a NIB Leek in TIZDP, send me an email! I'll pay a nice finder's fee for one. :)

VERY hard to come by, regarding the TiZDP Leeks. I think the one that showed up on the bay last week went for close to $200!! I was outbid, of course!:grumpy: And I thought I bid pretty well too!!

Good luck,
Jonny

SPX, I'll admit a zdp is not gonna be the knife for Me considering the difficulty sharpening properly. I'm lazy. If I cant keep it sharp using My dmt diamond steel the edge will not be a edge. S30v is as high tech as i get. I am plenty happy with the sandvik steels. I like the ti handle and the frame lock however.

Seems like kershaw is the only brand I have seen making a frame lock????
