I was asked to make a portable trap demo kit and this is what I came up with.
Part one is deadfalls.
It shows a Paiute Deadfall, a standard fig-4 deadfall and a second fig-4 with a vertical trigger.

Part two is a Spring Spear Trap

Part three is snares.
It shows an L7 snare as well as a treadle trigger snare.

There will be many more traps to come, these are just the ones I started with. The next trap I make will be a bow trap that shoots an arrow at the target when a trip wire is set. Let me know what your guys think, how I can improve it, or any traps that you guys would like to see added to the demo set.

that is fricken awesome, bring on the bow trap!!!!!!!

I'll do the bow trap this weekend but that's the last one I'm gonna post in the mini trap series. I thought this thread would get more than one response in a couple days. I know that over the years the skills that are popular kinda go in cycles and right now trapping is low on the scale. I'm gonna make more threads on trapping but they won't be standard traps like the fig 4 or rolling snare. I posted the second vid on a pig spear trap because I though it would get some interest but after 120 views and only one post it seems like a waste of time. Here's what I'm gonna do to fix that. I'm gonna find more exotic and interesting traps to post. I'll make them full size. I'll include photos in the next threads for people that have slow internet feeds or who don't want to watch videos. If you guys can give me some feedback I will change what I post about trapping to fit the interests of the current set of WSS forumites.

You know,
I have to apologize.
I am one of those people who mooches info
and doesnt have the courtesy to say thanks.
I do thank you for your posts,
many times Im busy and "i'll post a reply later" which
then doesnt happen.
Im sure there are many folks like me who do appreciate
the time and hard work it takes
for you (and all the others as well) to create your threads
and only to see no replies.
I kind of know the feeling when i make a thread and constantly
'go back to see if someone left a reply.....

Anyway
THANK YOU and please keep posting your traps
and any other info,
I assure you that I for one really do appreciate them !

Thanks, I'm glad you liked it but I want to make sure that my post isn't taken wrong. My goal is to spark conversations and to see newer member try this stuff out. My favorite thing to see is a member making a successful trap for the first time. I also know that seeing the same five traps over and over gets boring after a while so thats why I'm gonna find new stuff that hopefully won't be the same old thing again.
I made this thread a little while ago on the Philippine rat trap made of bamboo.
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=815059
and this one on a back breaker trap
http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9092326&posted=1#post9092326
Both of these got some notice because they were different than what we normally see posted. I want to get people to try this stuff and to post about what they make because a lot of these skills are being lost by the next generation of woodsmen. Forums like this are by far my best resource to get people interested in primitive trapping and I know of at least a few people that have made their first traps and taken game because of what they have learned here at WSS:thumbup:

I could watch 10 videos of people making the same trap
10 videos of people showing how to use a fire steel
10 videos of people setting up a hammock
and I would not get tired of it at all.
Many (some) of us have to do much of our outdoor
bushcrafting vicariously through those of you you live in an area
suitable for it.
I live in downtown chicago.
yes,I get out a few times a year to go camping with my son
but thats about it.
Will I ever make a figure 4 deadfall in the wild? probably not
do I enjoy learning how to do it and see it in use.of course!

I really enjoy seeing all outdoor bushcrafting related
photos,videos and lessons.
If I didnt,I would join #citydwellers.org

Thanks again

(I didnt mean for my first post to make it sound like you were having a hissy fit cuz nobody replied to your thread, sorry
if it cam off that way)

This thread is awesome... traps are intereasting to me and somewhat difficult to find information on. This series of videos are well done...

I love to bowhunt, fish and long ago trapped. Mostly read about trapping now but still very interested. I have always been interested in the trapping methods you describe but have never found any clear info on the actual mechanics of how to make these different types of traps until now. Very informative and interesting. I will be giving some of them a try. Keep them coming. Thanks.

i really liked the demo of the philipine pig trap.

thanks and keep em coming.

Computer down, viewing on my blackberry and don't see the vids, definately check back in a few weeks when I get another home pc. Just started learning and making more traps. Was able to catch a rat in an L7 last fall in my backyard

Hey Md 25v, I commend you on your efforts to expose more people to various traps and snares. Personally, I love trap triggers. The mechanics and deadly efficiency of something that can be made with sticks, stones and various pieces of cordage are amazing.

I'll include photos in the next threads for people that have slow internet feeds or who don't want to watch videos.

I definitely fall in this category. I have high speed light and it takes a while to download, and also, I get charged extra over a certain amount of downloads, so I look forward to the photos. On top of which, I can copy and paste pictures and text to my traps and snares data base - videos, not so much.

Over the years, I have posted various, out-of-the-ordinary trap set ups (for example), and I agree, a lot of times the feedback is minimal. I see more responses to somebody's old jack knife. But, I guess, such is the nature of BladeForums, even in Wilderness & Survival Skills.

In Ontario, the use of any kind of traps or snares, with the exception of snare wire use on Snowshoe Hares in the northern part of the province, is illegal unless you are a licensed trapper, so none of my posts include any game other than Pierre, the stuffed rat.

To conclude, I'm looking forward to your future threads which include, I hope, the Samson (sp?) deadfall (always wanted to set that up).

Doc

Doc, I could certainly make a Sampson Deadfall but I really don't think they are very good. That style predates many of the deadfalls used in modern times like the fig4 and Paiute trigger daedfalls. The Sampson is definitely easier to construct but because the nearly vertical deadfall support stick is actually under the deadfall itself there is much more of a chance that it will impede the fall of the weight. The rock under the support stick also plays a large part in tuning the trap. How rough the rock is and how round it is will play significant factors in the traps sensitivity. I know the trap works, but I don't think the design is very efficient compared to many others. Still, it is a good one to know based solely on ease of construction.
NOT MY VID

Hey Md 25v,

I was referring to bear size traps, not traps for rabbits. Actually, I am very interested in any bear-sized traps. I've only seen the Sampson.

Doc

Hi Md 25v -

Cool!

Thanks for posting those vids!

best regards -
