Mini-Disc recorder/players...any experience with these??

I was looking at some MP3 players, but I kinda like being able to play different types of music without having to go back to a computer and pull up a file, or whatever you would call it...as far as I can understand it, what's on the MP3 player is all you can hear, right? You have to erase the content and then you can put something different on there?
I realize that with the small Mini Disc recorders that you can put songs on a small disc and then play what you want depending on your mood. The drawback to me is that the MP3s seem to be "skip-free" and maybe the Minidisc players aren't bad, but are they able to take moving around, or the occasional bump? It looks like the minidisc is in a holder, kinda like a floppy disc, and the player I'm looking at is the Sony MiniDisc Recorder Walkman, with some feature that claims to really dampen the amount of "skip."
Any opinions on this subject?
Thanks!

It records the music but does it real time, a 5 min song takes 5 min. The new net MD seem to be a better idea, digital tranfer like sycing a palm pilot, much quicker,

Oh, no skipping when playing my minidisc player

I have a Sony MZN1 Net MD. It will not skip, even if you shake it vigorously.
I also have a mini disc player in the car as this is where I listen to most of my music. Record with the walkman, then play in the car.

i have a netmd, and liked it until my real computer broke. not having a usb port on my "laptop", i dont use it at all anymore

Minidisc players can be as skip free as a CD player. Most of the reasonable ones now days have 30 or 45 seconds of data storage so that they can continue to play even if the actual read from the disk is disrupted by jostling. You shouldn't have any problems.

I have the older portable Sony MiniDisc recorders (MZ-R50 & MZ-R30) that only recorded in their native mode - ie: PASC compression.

They displaced my portable DAT recorder for recording live music.

I actually think the results from the minidisc recorder sounds better, despite the better specs of DAT (I have pretty good ears, and am very fussy, up to a point, about sound quality).

However as advised a minidisc recorder with net/computer/MP3 ability would now be my choice (but for me I would still want the mic and line inputs for live music recording - so a net/computer only option is not good enough)

Check out this site for tons of resources:

I recorded two years of university lectures on MD (still have 'em all)
Crystal clear recording - excellent for viavoice (etc) to convert.

I prefer the miniture mechanical marvels of MD to solid state. I'm just more impressed by it all.

No skipping with mine. I purchased a Sony MZ-55 about 4 years ago, and haven't felt the need to get an MP3 player. Around 74 minutes of recording per minidisc. The playback quality from recording is excellent.

i had the 3rd series of the 1st generation of MDs
never took it running, but they just wouldn't skip when i walked quickly or jostled them in the bag
but i gave up on them due to the recording times (1st gen = realtime)

i just got the iriver ifp-395t mp3 player with 512M of ram
sound is superb, volume can be as LOUD as you like it and it comes with great accessories (sennheiser headphones~!)

Thanks for all the info! I'm looking at the Sony MZ-NE410, but they have an older version for sale, the MZ-N505 Gold from Sony also...it looks as though the NE410 is a bit more up to date; very confusing stuff! I'm learning as I go along though.
That site is excellent and I've found a lot of reviews. Except for the price, I'd go for the Sony with the weather/FM/TV audio included, but the main reason for getting one is the mini-CDs that you can do yourself. Now, as long as I get a decent carrying case that I can wear in the gym, I'll be able to make up my mind...

To me, minidisc players beat mp3 players hands down in almost every category. I get about 45 hours out of *one* AA battery on my MD player. The new ones are only getting better. With MDLP, you can fit 5 hours of music on one MD, at a pretty decent quality. As for skipping, my player reads from the disc for about 5-10 seconds every 2-3 minutes. Even shaking it when it is reading, it still won't skip. I've had my player for a year and a half and it hasn't skipped once. Mine's a sony, I don't remember the model number, its in my car. Sony really knows what they're doing with these things.
