Mini Entrenching Tool

On my last canoe/camping trip I managed to part company with an old friend; a mini entrenching tool with a small shovel head (about the size of the palm of your hand) and a pick on the other side. It had a 14" steel handle in two parts (6" screw in extension)and all packed up in a neat little bag about the size of a compact camera case. I bought it from Marks and Spencer (UK)on close out and I know they don't sell them anymore. This was a great little digger as it was small enough to go in a day sack for walking but was also OK for longer trips in the canoe. As I never find the need to dig a fox hole or slip trench I have managed without a full size military model, does anyone know any online outlets that stock a similar item? I have had a look but only seem to turn up larger military items.

Cheers SD.

Thanks for the help Jeff, that looks about the right size for what I need. If I can't get something without the "extras" (i.e. cheaper)I'll probably fork out for one of these. ;)

If you don't need an actual pick, I've had good luck with my Glock entrenching tool. Steel shovel blade, steel saw, extendable synthetic handle, about $40. I've been using it for several years without any problems. However, it may be larger than what you are contemplating.

I think the item you're referring to is at www.actiongear.com
Do a search under "entrenching" and you'll see the "mini folding pick and shovel combo" - $USD14.99

Cheers,

I like my Glock too. The saw is not very good, but as a digger, spade, paddle and slasher it works well.

Has anyone used the Walther Jungle Tool? Please do give a mini report as it looks neat. What is the cost?

Daniel L thanks ever so much. That is the exact same one that I lost and about the same price I paid in the M&S sale! I'm not saying Scotsmen are mean, I just don't like to pay extra for stuff I won't use. I just knew that someone here would come good, what a place. It has also sorted out what some people will be getting for Christmas this year :D .

I would also recommend this little gem to anyone who gets out and about in the woods etc. Excellent for latrines, tent pegs, water holes and I even used it once to convince an uptight Rotweiller that I was getting out of the car unmollested (no animals were seriously hurt in recounting this tale)Here's the link

Thanks again SD

The Walther Jungle Tool is reviewed in the Jan. 2002 Survival column of Tactical Knives. This issue should be on the newsstands now. It's the one with the Mad Dog knife on the cover.

Flotsam, even better, it looks like the same tool and you get 5 for $40; knock out! Jeff those Walthers are cool but possibly too cool for latrine duty ;) Seriously if you already have a knife (that means all of us I think...) and you've already made arrangements for your small/survival kit, etc. then I'd go with the cheapo. If you haven't get the Walther and impress your friends, you can even flash a signal to them as you return from the woods to put the coffee on...
Once again gentlemen thank you for your help and advice, you're the best.
