Mini Firesteel Kit

Thats the only one I know of, but an alternative could to get an $8 magbar from walmart and take the ferro rod off that.

I had seen those and there are several sizes being sold on Ebay and http://ferrocerium.com/. You could sure make you own with a little plastic ball or something glued on the end.

I'm working on getting the weight and size down on my survival gear. I filled up a container this morning and didn't like what I saw on the scale. It was a pretty through kit. Some stuff is just lumpy and doesn't pack well. It's a squeeze, and what the heck, who's gonna quit when the PSK is just half full!

I have had good luck buying just the ferrocerium from ferrocerium.com and just dipping an end into plasti dip, a product for putting plastic coating or handles on tools. I use 3-5 coats let it hang dry to touch for about a half hour then you can shape the handle any way you like and let harden. I got the dip from either lowe's or HD.

I got several off Ebay a while back. The seller was youhavemale I think. The sparks from them are better than any other steels I have used. FWIW, my .4x 4" steel weighs 1 3/4 oz. It is a bit heavy, but copy paper works just fine as tinder, as well as hay.

If you've got some of those tinder packs, the sparklite seems to work with a lot less effort. I did just get a bunch of the mini firesteels in though. Great for teh size.

for my small kits I use a bsa hotspark they are small, relatively flat and easy to pack in an altoids tin style psk. and they can be had real cheap... I think I tpaid 4 bucks each or something like that from the boyscouts page.

I bought the k1 strike master from campingsurvival.com and it's quite small if you have interest in the magnesium too. It looks very similar to the "sparky" Quiet Bear mentioned.

Talkin bout some Hot Spark baby this evening, talkin bout some Hot Spark baby tonight! Ain't that how the song goes?

The BPL (Backpackinglight.com) kits arrived. They are just right for a neck lanyard or small kit. I'll probably repackage the tinder into a spy capsule and keep the Aloksaks for first aid and other stuff I want to keep waterproof.

I had ordered one of the BCB Ranger flints. They are quite small and come with a tough hacksaw striker. The construction of the flint is interesting: a small diameter flint is mounted in a steel frame. They write that it is the current issue for British armed forces. Bestglide is another of those outfits that has a good selection of gadgets and gear for survival kits.

I have tried the BCB filnt and although it does work I think it is a poor design.
It limits where you can scrape and it is uncomfortable in the hand. In fact I found most of the BCB products to be of inferior quality.

Try as you may I doubt one will find a better small fire steel than the Hot Spark.
Other than the striker which you don't really need (and it works) the BSA Hot Spark is the best mini fire steel out there.

I have handled the Light My Fire mini and it is as nice as the HS but cost 2-3 times more.
