ETA: I originally posted a link to the review here, but the more I thought about it, that was kinda stupid :D So.... Here it is :D

Anyone that spends much time here knows there have been numerous complaints about BM's QC lately. Bad grinds, edges that are less than ideal, as well as the popular blade not being centered issue...

Out of the 7 Mini Grips I currently own, I have not had any complaints in the QC area. I have never owned a 555 version, but took a liking to the blade design some time back, and thought it was time to give one a try.
After deciding to buy one, I stopped at the local Sportsmans Warehouse on my way to work a couple weeks ago. On my way there, I got to thinking about the recent QC issue that have been talked about, and decided I would do something different this time...

Any time I buy a new knife from a brick and mortar dealer, I carefully inspect the knife, and if I'm not happy with it, I ask to see others, but this time I decided to take whatever they gave me. I told the clerk which model I wanted, he pulled out a box, and opened it just to verify it was the correct knife and closed it back up...

When I got out to my pickup, the suspense was killing me, hoping I didn't get one with issues. I was going to wait until I got home that night to inspect it, but couldn't stand it :D

Upon removing it from the baggie, the first thing I looked at was blade centering. Nice... That was a relief. The next thing I checked was the grind and edge.
Again, no complaints here. I gave it a quick test on my arm, and yes it will shave. It doesn't shave quite as easy as the ones I carry and have worked the edge over on, but it shaved, so I can't complain.

Next I checked the blade for movement. Nope... No side to side movement, or up and down movement. In fact, they absolutely nailed the tension on this knife. Other than just a little hesitation from being new, it has the same tension that I adjust mine to. I don't know if this was a fluke or not, but I was pleasantly surprised. After sitting in my chair and opening and closing the knife probably 20 times, the hesitation is gone when dropping the blade closed.
I gotta say, the Sheepsfoot blade is really growing on me. It reminds me of a small folding kitchen knife :D

I looked this knife over good, and can only find two complaints, and neither are major issues:

Issue #1 : Inside the round blade hole, there is a tiny burr. I think it will show in the pictures. Nothing that can't be remedied in a minute with a file or Dremel, and if IIRC, others have mentioned having this on their 555's. I can't feel it when opening the knife though.

Issue #2 : This one has been recently talked about here, and that is the two spots on the end of the scales from the moulding process. Again, nothing that can't be remedied in a minute or so...

So, all in all, I am extremely happy with this knife, and my faith in Benchmade remains intact, as it has for probably close to 20 years now...
Don't get me wrong, I know some knives have issues, it happens no matter who the maker is, but in all of the knives I have owned over the years, I have has absolutely zero issues. The only time I have used BM's customer service was when I sent in my 705 for a blade replacement because I grew tired of the serrations, and when I called to order some pocket clips.
Thanks for taking the time to read this. Now for the required pictures :D

Great knife. One of my favorite model knives. I've been lucky as well in that I've not gotten one with issues. I just received one of the "customs" that W&W sell and just had to adjust the pivot to where I like it, and I used the file on a Vic Minichamp to knock down the rough spots on the end of the handle from the molding as you mentioned. No biggee.

I've had the same experience with the standard 154 steel versions as well. And while I know in my actual use it us doubtful I'd no the difference between the 154 and S30, I'm just a S30/S35 fan. Dunno. :)

I know their seems to be more f & f threads here from disappointed buyers but I hope it doesn't sour them on the brand.

Anyway - great mini review and nice pics.

Thanks!

Here in the UK its pretty difficult to go to a store and purchase a Benchmade let alone inspect and choose, luckily I've never had a problem with the QC on knives purchased online.
As for the two issues you have, its just quirks of the Grip kinda like a belly button.
I was lucky enough to purchase a custom 555 on the forum with S30V (you can't purchase Customs in the uk) and I'm very excited :)

Thanks Joe. Congrats on your new custom. I've never had a complaint with any of BM's various steel offerings. My current EDC is an early 440C that holds up quite well. In all honesty, I don't think most of us could tell the difference in a blind test, unless subjecting the knife to very heavy use, which these days I don't seem to do anymore. It is nice having choices though.

I'm not sure which customs you are talking about. If you would, send me a p.m with a link to that dealer, unless they are a BF supporting member, in which case you could list it here

That's good to hear. Yes, the two "issues" are really non-issues. Congrats on your new custom.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on such a great little knife, I'm a fan.

Hi 338375. Nice review. I recently discovered a local BM premium + dealer and picked up the same model at the end of February. I am usually pretty observant, but on initial inspection, I did not notice the tiny burr of metal on the right side of the opening hole. I understand that this can be easily removed, but it isn't a big deal to me. The only other thing I found after owning the knife for a couple days was a 3/4 inch "scratch" (right, rear side of blade above the edge about half an inch from the handle). I am just barely able to feel it with my finger nail when I move it across. I even thought that it might have occurred after opening and closing the blade a couple times. Again, it isn't a big deal to me. I like that the knife fits well in my hand, is easy to open and so far slices and dices when called upon.

Thanks. Without seeing a picture, I'm not sure what would have caused the scratch. Is your blade centered when it is closed ? My guess, and it is only a guess, is that it came from the factory that way.

I have a 550HG (full-size), and it also has the burr in the opening hole - even at the same spot! No other quality issues to report (purchased new back in February, in my pocket since).

And I have a question for those of you with experience with BM's custom 550/555 blades: are the D2 & S30V offerings hollow ground, or flat? I have heard/read mixed reports. Thanks!

Thanks for nice review :)
Here's my brand new 555OD 440C

I love this little guy ;)

Very nice. If you decide he needs a new home, let me know :D I have two 440C versions, but I'm always on the lookout for the early Minis.

 I can't help you out with the 550 blades. I've never owned a full size Grip]

Quick picture of two S30V bladed Mini Grips. They're both hollow ground. Please forgive my horrible camera skill. I tried to catch the grind lines. I don't think I've seen a FFG model. But I'm not an expert on them either.

I think the thumb stud models are available flat ground. My Ritter's are I guess what you'd call hollow ground but compared to the S30V thumbholes, the grind is much higher up on the blade and not as acute, if I'm describing that right.

My thumbstud S30V is packed away and I'm too lazy to unbox everything to check but I'm sure someone else can chime in to verify.

I've never had a chance to get one of the 440C models. What year were those?

Hi Joe58. That 555 with the Wilkins scales is looking really good. The bottom blade is coated, correct?
I would probably have at least one of these coated S30V blades, but I just can't bring myself to pay the custom order premium. That and I have already picked up 3 mini and two full size grips in the past month.

That is a nice looking pair
I do remember reading that the 550's in S30V and D2 are FFG from the custom build program.
IIRC, the 440C versions were made the first 4 years of production. I'm heading off to work now, but will look in my notes when I get home tonight to verify

Joe58 & 338375:

Thanks for the information on the blade grind; it is curious that Benchmade would produce the custom 550's flat and the 555's hollow. A D2 or S30V 550 is on my short list of future knife purchases, but honestly, it loses some of its appeal if not hollow-ground (might as well get a 551 or Ritter then, in my opinion). If I go down the custom road, I'll be sure to show off the results!

I would call BM and ask them directly what the blade grinds are, just to be safe. Things do change...

I forgot to post my custom S30V...
