Mini Grip blade retention

Do all the mini grips have about the same blade retention? I ask because the last one I handled had pretty weak retention and the thumb stud would catch my pocket when removing it and open on its own. Kinda dangerous. Didn't feel safe. I've been thinking about trying another one but thought the sheepsfoot version with thumb hole would solve this problem. Anyone experience similar retention issues?

My one example is just right. It has the thumb stud.
I suppose if you got one with a problem you could disassemble the knife and unbend the springs some. Maybe make some marks on a piece of paper or cardboard before you start bending the springs so you know when you have un wound them some (probably will take several tries) and so that you can unbend both of them the same amount so the Axis will work smoothly.

First I would try just lubing the blade pivot and lock. Make sure the blade swings free enough.

Ive got 2 minis (one a sheepsfoot) and never had a problem with them coming open on their own. Light
retention, but not too light.
My Nakamura on the other hand with the longer barbell studs has partially opened when snagged on
the pocket coming out a couple times. No blood yet.

Thanks for the replies folks. Gonna try to find a store that carries them in my area so I can test a couple out. Spyderco has all but ruined my want for thumb studs at this point so I'm glad the mini grip has the hold option.

What you describe is one of the downsides of the axis-lock, though I've not had one come open in a pocket you can "push" most of them open without using the thumb stud or hole with a stiff flick/pushing motion with the wrist, while the lock is engaged. That is to say, not disengaging the axis a flicking open, which we all know is very easy to do. Dropping a knife with an axis can easily cause it to come open, there simply isn't much pressure keeping the knife closed.

I like the lock, but this is a downside. I've actually started enjoying the axis-auto more because it stays shut better, which I appreciate.

The sheepsfoot mini-grip is probably one of my favorite modern folders for EDC, right up there with the native 5. Sold my mini with intentions of getting one in M4 in the near future.

So I played with one my bro-in-law got for Christmas. Blade retention is not strong, but I think the problem is the distance between the thumb stud and the scales. Enough space for the edge of your pocket to get in there and accidentally swing the blade open. A sheepsfoot is in my future. Should alleviate that problem and I think the funky blade shape looks pretty cool. Side note, his mini grip was solid as can be with great action and centered blade.

If the thumbstud catches sth on the way out, the knife will likely open, which has little to do with the retension. That said, the Axis lock is among the locks with light retension.
