Hi everyone, just bought my first Benchmade. I purchased it from a local dealer and I've been playing with it all night. I got the 555 version and I LOVE IT. That is until I looked at it closely and I realized that it's an older version and has the 440C blade on it. Now here's my question to all your blade steel experts should I just keep it? Or do I take it back and go get the one with the updated steel? Are there advantages to the 440C? I just feel like if I keep it, I'm missing out on getting a steel upgrade, especially since I paid the same price for it. I hate when an impulse buy goes wrong! :grumpy: So, what do you think everyone? Keep it? Or take it back and look for the 154CM one? Is Benchmade's 154CM really that much better?

I think in real use you are not likely to notice a difference between 440C and 154CM, at least the way Benchmade does these two steels.

Don is correct. 440-C is an excellent steel. Look how much Boker uses it. I'd keep it.

I went through the same thing when I ordered mine. Everyone said the same thing, either way your good to go their both good steels and you'd never notice the difference if you had both of them side by side cutting all the same things.

It is my understanding that many people prefer the old Benchmade 440C better than the 154CM, it that helps you.

154CM will hold an edge a bit better than 440C, but unless you do side-by-side comparison cutting measurements, I doubt you will notice the difference. If it were mine I would use it and enjoy.

I have one in regular use with 440C and it's an excellent little knife. Holds an edge well and is easy to get shaving sharp.

Is the search function down, or something?

I guess everybody knows, how that feels, but these feelings aren´t really based. Forget it! My little son has some of that feelings too, when he has decided on a new toy he never feels sure. Maybe the other one might have been better? Simply forget it!

I have five different steel grades, in BM models. None of each is really, what i was looking for but 154CM and 440C and S30V are close to another. D2 is somehow rougher on the edge and M2 is fine, really.

Hope, the topic is not down on BM forums, so you may find it using keewords like "rubberized hogshair". Hope you find it, enjoy it!

Thanks everyone for the great advice, but I think I solved the problem. I just went out and bought a second Mini-Grip! :) I bought a 556 (partially serrated and with the thumb studs) that did have the new upgraded steel and decided to just keep the 555 in 440C as well. Now I can sleep easy! Maybe I'll do a personal test and see if I can find any difference as time goes on. They're great knives, I think having two to switch off as EDC is probably a pretty good use of my money. Right?

I don't think any production 440C knife has ever satisfied me more than my 440C Benchmades. It's good stuff.
