I want to get a Mini-Griptilian for a user knife, but can't decide which steel.

This would also be a knife that I would let friends/family use when hunting, fishing or doing yard work, so i don't have to worry about them misusing my more expensive blades. I also figure that letting them use a fine knife like the Griptilian might actually convert a few more people into knife knuts. :-)

I am a huge fan of BM's 154cm, but could be interested in giving their D2 a try. Anybody have both that could comment?

Both are great, but if you're going to be letting friends use it, I'd go with 154cm.

I have the D2 but it costs a significant amount more and honestly is not a huge improvement over the excellent 154cm.

Now if you got a mini Ritter (S30V), that is an awesome blade :) But then again, you're looking at even more cash.

I tend to prefer 154cm over D2. Also, when you let others borrow your knife, they do not always treat it as well as you would. If they don't wipe it down after certain uses, 154 will give you better corrosion resistance. Not a huge deal though as D2 is condidered semi stainless.

Both steels are very similar in actual use. I would just buy what is cheaper.

For a loaner, I'd go with 154CM. It will be easier to repair if someone damages the edge. D2 takes a little more time to sharpen/reprofile.

I have both. The 154 seems to be easier to maintain. The D2 was wicked sharp when new, but now seems harder to get a really good edge.

Well, i guess i will stick with the 154cm. I have several other BMs with 154 and have had good luck. Its also got to be the cheapest knife with such a quality steel as well.

Thanks for the comments!

I personally really like d2 but since you have made your choice I guess it doesnt matter. Out of the many steel I have used I think bm d2 ranks as one of my favorites. I like how it holds a usable edge forever. I think it is a great choice for a knife you dont touch up all that much.
