Hello everyone,
I have decided to purchase a mini griptilian. My question to you is; is the Ritter 558 griptilian that much better than the 556 mini griptilian? I would be purchasing the 556 for $60 and the Ritter mini grip would be $112.00. Is the s30v that much better than the 154cm? Is the blade shape and steel of the Ritter 558 mini grip really worth $52.00 more over the 556 mini griptilian.
I have my mind pretty much made up but if anyone can convince me that the Ritter mini grip is worth almost double the 556 mini grip it would be much appreciated!

Well, past the $30 or so point, you get diminishing returns for your $$, but for me it is worth it. I absolutely love the bladeshape of the Ritter Grip, and the S30V is a nice bonus. That, and I can justify custom handles for the Ritter Grip a little easier, since Cuscadi handles are slightly cheaper than the Ritter, but more expensive than the standard MiniGrip. That said, the regular MiniGrip is a great knife. You win either way, just a little differently.

I definitely prefer the blade shape, steel, and grind on the Ritter grip to the regular. It's a higher grind and a superior steel IMO, so it's a better cutter overall from what I've found, and if you're a drop point fan, it's just a sexier blade. Also, I've gotten rid of nearly every blade I've owned in Benchmade's 154CM. For some reason I just can't seem to get it as sharp as other steels. YMMV. Maybe I keep getting lemons.

Bobusx, is that a Gold Class Rift? Mine doesn't have the carbon fiber...

I am debating between the 2 right now. Leaning towards the Ritter just because I prefer the blade shape, but I think the pocket clip was updated (parkerized). There is also a batch of M4 mini ritters coming out soon but those will be even more than the s30v flavor. The m4 will be orange handles with black blade.

I personally cant decide between the orange mini ritter and baby blue mini. The stonewash and blade shape are just so much sexier on the ritter. Also, one thing to keep in mind, the resale value will probably hold up better on the ritter model

It is the LE Benchmade Forums 2012 knife, CF and M4 with clear Cerakote. I got lucky and registered a day or so before they started taking orders, just by coincidence, so I was one of the last folks to get in on the initial run. There have been some leftovers though, I would hit up the forums over there and see if any are left if you are interested.

I own a 556 in 154cm, and have thought of upgrading to s30v(you can send in your 556 for a replacement blade). My friend misused it and had broken off the tip, so I thought I should upgrade given the chance. Just before doing so, I decided to re profile the tip and sharpen it as well using a japanese waterstone(previosuly only used cheap, V shaped sharpener), and was really impressed! Not only did I get my tip back, the 154cm blade was able to get very, very sharp... even sharper than the factory grind. I decided to keep the 154cm as I found it rather easy to work with, and edge retention is pretty good.

I still do sort of want to replace the blade with s30v... but have not found a good enough reason as of now.

Another option is to order a custom mini-grip from BM where you can choose a S30V blade along with a variety of color and clip options. Probably makes the cost about the same as the Ritter though.

Mini grip with s30v on the custom BM page will be $135, which is not only more than the ritter, but also doesnt have the blade shape/grind. I wanted to customize my colors and steel, but not going to dish that out when not getting the more aesthetically please blade, imo

Thanks everyone!
I to like the Ritter mini grips blade shape better to but I just don't know if I really want to shell out almost double what it would cost for a regular mini.

I absolutely prefer Ritter to Benchmade. The only Benchmade is the Gold class with the M4 steel and carbon fiber handles/grips.

Ritter, hands down, and in my opinion its not even close. The bump up to s30v is nice, but the Ritter blade shape is really where it shines.

Thanks! I have decided to get the 558 Ritter mini grip with the orange handle.
Thank you again for all the help!

I've had at least 20 different griptilians and nowadays I only have two. A large and small Ritter. They just have an appeal that defies explanation. Be warned though, once you go Ritter you can't go back.

Haha yeah it looks awesome, icant wait to get it. I will be ordering it within the next 2 weeks!
