Hello,

I am more and more interested in the mini griptilian for EDC. This small knife is really growing on me.
I am looking for a knife that is discrete and that will be used mainly to cut through cardboard ....
I already have a couple of 94x and I like the axis lock.

What would you recommend between the 557 and the 558?
If I go for the 557, do you think the serrations may make sense?
I have always doubted the serrations may useful on such a small blade

Yes, I would has liked getting both... ;)
But first I will not put that much money in mini grips and second I am rebuilding my EDC set and I would like to limit my number of knives ;)

I already reach 8 knives without paying attention to the increase and I am actually carrying almost only 5 of them... So 2 will be traded soon, maybe a third one latter ...
So for the moment I will try to stay "practical" in my choices on knives

557 is a tanto and 558 is a mini RSK/Ritter so the blade shapes are very different.
Tanto tips are more for stabbing and Doug's blade is more versatile and has a flatter grind which will carve and slice better.
I am not a fan of serrations and BM will not resharpen the serrations with their Life Sharp Service. Also not a fan of Tantos so my choice would be 558 every time.

The 558 has M390 steel and the 557 has 154cm which is not as tough but easier to sharpen.

That pretty much sums up my opinion as well

I had a 557 as my first BM and liked everything about it except the blade shape. I then had an opportunity to sell my 557 and contemplated the 558 or a mini Grip special order. After research and conflicting opinions I decided to go the less expensive route with a 556 and love it. In my 57 years I've had 3 EDC knives. A Camillus Cutlery Barlow my grandfather gave me, a small Kershaw folder, and now the BM. Could be my last, time will tell. Still have my 2 retired EDCs. Love the deep carry clip BM sent me for free, the one hand operation of the axis lock, and the blade shape of the 556. The 154CM blade got better on the Tanto after I sharpened it a couple of times, haven't had the drop point long enough to need sharpening yet. I expect no difference.

Stay safe, John

PS: EDC means EVERY day;).
