I received a Mini-Griptilian model 556 as an early Christmas gift this afternoon. It is my understanding that the knife left the factory with a 30 degree primary bevel. I generally put a 30 degree back bevel and a 40 degree primary bevel on my general use pocket tools using my Sharpmaker. I would be interested in hearing the thoughts from forum members who own this knife whether they sharpen at a straight 30 degrees or whether they use the 30/40 routine and what their experiences have been in this regard.

Thanks for your time.

Why do you prefer the 30/40 rather than. the same on both sides?

Thanks,
Rich

The combination of the 30 back bevel with the 40 primary edge seem to give me the best results in my actual cutting use. It was my understanding that the 40 micro bevel would serve to strengthen the blade edge while at the same time allowing me to take advantage of the narrower back bevel. As this is my first Benchmade and first knife with 154cm steel I am open to suggestions from folks who have more experience than I with these knives.

I've had really bad luck with most knives on initial edges. They always seem to come way too obtuse. I've had 2 BM 710's. Both came with an edge of over 40 degrees inclusive. I say plan to rebevel as it is more likely (at least in my case) that you will receive it with a very obtuse initial edge.

Sharpen it at whatever angle best suits your purposes. There really isn't a "correct" angle IMHO. Mine is kept at 30 and it works just fine.
