Mini Griptilian Casualty -- Lesson Learned. Do you let others use your knife?

I was working a fitness event at a concert venue today. As we were setting up, a girl that was trying to open boxes of fitness equipment looked at me and was like "do you happen to have a pocket knife?". Of course I did so I pulled out my mini grip and gave it to her so she could open the boxes. Three minutes later I turned around and I see her using it to scrape gum off of the concrete steps. LOL. It was like nails on the chalkboard hearing that steel scrape the concrete but I figured it was too late and I'd just deal with the damage later so I didn't say anything. Then before I knew it they opened the doors to the venue and 2000 people flooded in and I didn't see her or the knife again. It was a standard 556 so it could be worse -- I almost took the mini grip i bought customized from BM.

I've learned my lesson but that made me think. If I was carrying something really nice what would I have done? I didn't think about it today because the mini grip was only $80 and it's not rare or anything like that but now even with an $80 knife I don't think I would hand it to anybody if they ask to use it.

What do you all think? Do you let others use the knives you carry?

I wouldn't have let her move out of my sight with my knife, but that's just me. However, I'm not blaming you or anything especially if the scene instantly got hectic as you said. Hey, ya live and learn, brother.

I always ask for a $100 deposit when I loan out a knife. That keeps people from wanting to use it...

Sorry about your Mini Grip, I've just recently returned my 2 to my EDC rotation (occasions when I don't feel like carrying my mainstay ZT0566). I put pow rider clips on them, the standard clip was part of the reason I stopped carrying them. Back on topic, I've stopped lending my good EDCs to anyone and usually also carry one of my Cryos as temporary loaners or beaters. Heard too many horror stories and have a few close calls myself.

That's harsh, but you never know, she may have been looking for you during all the people flooding in. Lol hopefully she managed to close it.

Someone knows who she is and where to find her. Sounds like probably an employee of an exhibitor at the show if she was opening product boxes. Depends on how much you want it back...

I never volunteer that I have a knife until way after after the "Anyone have a knife?" question. If I'm carrying a cheapie, I might let someone use it. Not my better folders though.

Others are not going to treat your good knife well. Half of them will steal it given opportunity and none of them will show it care.

I wouldn't' loan my knife out...unless said girl was cute and it opened up the oportunity to make a new cutty buddy lol

This is why I always carry at least 2 knives, my RCR (regular carry rotation) blade, and a loaner knife, which is usually a Swiss Cadet.
There was a big thread about loaning knives, i'm assuming OP didn't read it

The big question is, was she hot? Maybe you might get in touch with her and end up on a date all thanks to that knife

As little as possible anymore. I've justified carrying a 2nd EDC to have a loaner but now I've realized that most non knife carrying people treat loaners like something they would keep in a kitchen drawer. If I would loan a knife it would probably be the Delica I have on me most the time and while it wouldn't break the bank if it was ruined or lost, 60 bucks is 60 bucks that won't go to fund my next knife. Anymore I ask what they need it for and then do it for them.

Oh she definitely wants the D :D

On a more serious note, wasnt there another thread JUST like this a few days ago?

I learned my lesson with loaning knives long ago and now you have as well. You seem pretty relaxed about losing a Mini-Grip. I would be extremely pissed. I had a buddy steal a custom CA legal switchblade from me that fell out of my pocket and I still think about it probably once a week and its been 10 years since it happened. Maybe it's just me, but I hate losing anything. I would see it like taking $80 out of your wallet while driving and just throwing it out your window. Again, i'm sure you learned a valuable lesson form this so maybe the $80 lost will save you considerably more in the future. They say nothings free in life. I guess learning valuable lessons is no exception. :D

Only ones who'd get to use my knifes are either family members or colleagues. In either case, I know where the live!!! :/
