Hi can any one tell me if the mini tanto 557 has a thicker tip than the mini 556 and if so is it a big difference?..after breaking the tips on my manix 2 and pm2 i'm a littler weary of weak tips thanks

IIRC the 557 tip will be a bit thicker than the 556. Still, if you can break the tip on an Mx2, you might want to move out of the mini range and get into a bit larger and stouter blade. BM's Rift and Contego series have pretty strong tips, as does the 300SN. An alternative would be a different blade profile that creates a stronger tip without being a tanto profile. Emerson's Commander series comes to mind for folders... or something like an Izula or BRKT's Woodland Special in a FB.

How'd you manage to break your tips?

Chances are if it's doing something they aren't designed for, you'll manage to break pretty much any knife tip you abuse.

I broke both the tips on my spydercos after they fell on the floor. one on hardwood the other on granite..thanks for the post figured the 557 would be a little thicker

Neither knife will break on hardwood... Granite.... It's a possibility but not likely.
I don't drop my knives very often, I have dropped a couple on concrete, only damage was a section if the edge being blunted, easily remedied by a sharpening.

well the tip on both did break after being dropped on my hardwood floor and my granite bathroom floor falling out of my pocket, so you are wrong.

I've done prying on my Mini Grip. It still has a stronger tip than the PM2, and far stronger than the Manix 2 low hollow grind.
The regular sized grip is about .0126mm~
It's about .012mm on the Minigrip while the PM2 is abut .095mm behind the tip. That small .025mm difference makes a BIG different in tip strength.
The manix is even finer than the PM2 probably .08mm~ havent measured that one though.

Here's some results of my unscientific testing.
My testing showed that Regular grip (154CM) versus a Paramilitary 2 (S30v) had a difference of approximately 2mm in penetration (11m PM2 to 9mm Grip) when stabbing white oak board. About 20% on average. largest difference being about 33%~ which only occured once, most other were in the range of 18%-23%. This test was repeated 30 times (my hands were feeling raw by then. I did not use gloves.
I could not accurately test for strength laterally without having large deficiencies in the methodology (thought about using a pulley system, and adding weight until the tip deformed but found it inefficient). I have no idea on percentages but hopefully this gives an idea:
After about 10 stabs and prying chunks of, the Griptillian saw a small .01mm bend on the tip~ very small. The Pm2 saw immediately and considerable tip bend after about 1 stab (im thinking nearly one millimeter.

I've bent my Manix 2/PM2 doing simple whittling tasks, this is what prompted my testing. Manix 2's tip was deformed when doing some stabbing tests on the video I have on my youtube channel). I had to straighten it out. I am 100% certain I could break the Manix 2's tip on wood. The Pm2... maybe but I would have to be dumb to keep whittling with a bent tip, but certainly possible if I hit a knot and force it.

you are right for being such good build hard use knives the spydercos really juxapostion when it comes to the fine tips they have...went with a 0350 for hard use edc'in mini tanto grip

The Paramilitary is meant to be a survival knife, which doesn't reflect well on the needle point. The rest of the blade however is as stout as anyone needs in a under 4" folder, even with it's steep flat grind it holds up really well to hard wood with no damage to the edge when I whittled some wood.

Lastly I haven't received my Mini griptilian in M4 back from Benchmade due to a burnt tip causing concern for me (possible heat treat issue).

I did a couple of stab/pry tests because of a burnt tip before sending it out. It did not bend and the tip still had that needle like point. No damage. I suspect the knife is fine, but sent it to Benchmade to be sure. (Limited Edition, I wouldn't be happy having a tip snap off like a twig due to an overheated tip).

the tip on the Mini Grip is much thicker than the tip on the PM2. I don't think it is a concern.

Another BM to consider in the mini range with a strong tip would be the 15030. That's a stout, spear point, D2 tip in a package not much bigger / heavier than a mini-Grip. That's what I carry now for a warehouse work blade instead of a PM 2. Never had an issue with the PM 2 but I have dropped a few knives onto a concrete warehouse floor and I didn't want to take that chance with my PM 2 so I switched to the mini-BC. I'm finding that I really like the 525 / BC platform and the BC's blade profile makes it very competent for a wide range of cutting / piercing chores.

I meant the Benchmade Grips, not the Spydercos.
