Mini-jungle sheath project

I just ordered a GH mini-jungle, and I am going to make a kydex sheath for it. It will probably look somthing like the WWIII prototype sheath. I have a source for some .080" dark gray kydex, but the only chicago screws I can find are aluminum. Where is a good source for some black steel chicago screws?

Any input on sheath designs, carry options, whether or not to incorporate a sharpener, or any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. the mini-jungle is going to replace my CS trailmaster I carry during bow season.

The only source I've found for good stainless steel screws is Blade-Tech, but I think you can only order them in quantities of 100. Also, it probably doesn't make that big of a difference, but 0.093" thickness Kydex would work better for a knife that size. I will be getting a mini0jumgle soon, too, and will probably make a sheath for it as well. The one sheath I've made for a Cold Steel Gurkha Khukuri was a huge pain, so hopefully the mini is easier than that!

Chiro75,

Thanks for your reply. I agree that .093" would be better, but I can get a sheet of .080" drak gray from work for about $50, so I am going to try using it. If I have to, I think I could use some .125" for the back piece, to increase the stiffness.

I really don't need 100 chicago screws, so if you or some one else would be interested in splitting an order, please let me know.

Chiro 75, if your mini-jungle sheath is generally similar to the WWIII proto, I will want one! Keep me in mind, and post here when you're ready to roll!

I am thinking about including some sort of sharpener in the sheath design. Do you guys think this would be worth the extra trouble?
If so does anyone have any recomondations for a small sharpener or steel?

p.s. I wish I could spell.

I think it is Birchwood-Casey makes a thing called alluminum black.

If you saw the picture on the news a month or two back of the British Gurkha getting ready for Kosovo by sharpening his khuk with the tungsten-carbide "V" sharpener built into hi bayonet sheath, that might suggest something. I've found the t/c sharpeners work fine on khuks but the ceramic "V"s don't. Khuk blades are usually way too thick.

Personally, I don't fancy a sharpener build into the sheath.Adds weight and bulk, and my use of the Khukuri doesn't require field sharpening.

I would forego inclusion of a sharpener on a sheath for several reasons:
1) I wouldn't necessarily want one with the khukuri all the time.
2) It adds a lot to the size and complexity of the design.
3) I would rather make a stand-alone sheath for a sharpener, if I wanted it to be able to ride on a belt, then i could take the sharpener with me regardless of what knife I have with me.
As far as the design of my sheath, I have no idea what it will be like until I actually receive the mini-jungle (hopefully within 7-10 days...I am trading a Bhojpure back to Craig that hasn't been sent to him yet, so it may be as long as two weeks).

AlaChoctaw,
My guess is now that everyone is indoctrinated on Jim Marches sheath colaboration with Scott Evans and, the prototype pictures have been released on what Edge Works has done with Craigs knife.... there will be alot of kuhkri sheaths similar to this one being made real soon. A simple and useful design is hard to ignore

Actually, the EdgeWorks sheath is tough for a small maker like myself to duplicate. For one, it probably utilitzes the 0.125" thick "base plate", and who the heck is going to buy a .125" thick sheet of Kydex? Not me!

As such, the side-draw mechanism is tough to pull off without that stiff base layer for the khukuri, knife, whatever to lay nice and snug in. My sheath will probably be more of a traditional "out-the-top" sheath as a result. I don't know if Edge Works is making a sheath for the mini-jungle, what it will cost, or anything else, but if I am happy with the results of the one I make for myself (IF I make one for myself), then I will post a pic and some info on my site.

Wow - a kydex for the mini-jungle. That sound's neat. Please do post pics as they become available.
