Has anyone tried out the smaller khukris with a 6inch or less blade?

I am thinking of giving on of these a shot since their weight in reasonable enough to promote hiking use.

How is that 5160 carbon steel?

Could you post a non-mobile link?

Just go to the very bottom of the page and click on "Classic Site" :)

I've never used one as small as 6 inches but I've got an 7 or 8inch Khuk (i don't recall who made it or what its made of so I can't help you there)
It's still a chopping and cutting champ, they're almost as useful as the larger beasts but you can throw it in a bag and not even think about it til you need it :)

That's pretty cool. I think I'd like to get myself some sort of light chopping toy. This seems like a great option along with the machax.

I didn't realize some of those kukris have a stick tang. I would be a little concerned about that....

The steel is standard beater steel for blades from that part of the world, think vehicle spring salvage. That's no bad thing, plenty of folks in other places have appreciated the toughness of that route including in the US. Compared to other steels you are going to trade off some edge retention but that's to be expected. I don't know about those ones in particular but all of the reviews I have seen of the model a few inches up are favourable save for a few complaints about the strength of the leather belt loops. I would have thought it's a fairly safe punt if those are your thing.

Thanks for the tip jbob24.

While I have no calms about the size, steel, or specs. I'd do some research on the maker. There are low quality manufacturers out there putting out kukris that are more for show, with poor heat treats, that just do not hold up to any kind of use. The 5160 is the spring steel that HI uses, so that's legit. I'd be worried about the heat treat, and their honesty about steel.

At that cost, I'd be highly suspicious of the quality.

Not knowing the steel or the maker of mine, I can at least say that mine is an "OK" quality khukri, especially considering I got for nearly free... It's a fun toy, but nothing serious :)

I haven't chopped up a ton of bricks or cars or anything, but it chews up hardwood just fine and has only rolled the edge near the tip once (I think it's kind of soft)

I didn't pay attention to the price, but I definitely wouldn't pay more than $20-30 for it :)
