Some suggestions for a mini knife sharpener ... maybe ceramic, diamond, stone, sandpaper?
Some of my thoughts were making a mini ceramic, perhaps with a metal core?
Glueing some wet and dry to wooden dowel?

depends, I'm all about those extendable diamond sharpeners, great for fixing up a jacked up blade.

here's a site with one example.

work on axes/hatchets/knives. My personal experience with them is amazing, you can go from dull to razor sharp in a couple minutes, the technique is easy to learn.

2 Very good & compact sharpeners are the Fallkniven DC3 (3 inches long) & DC4(4 inches long)

Both are combination stones that have diamond on one side & ceramic on the other.

Kind regards
Mick

+10 0n the DMT Diafold. They come in a number of grits, weigh next to nothing, fold to a small size, and last forever (forever being a relative term, of course: your forever may be different than my forever). I use Diafolds for everything from good knives to axes and machetes. They'll quickly put a shaving sharp edge on any good steel and, with a stropping, the edge will be hair whittling sharp.

This might be kinda goofy but it worked for me once when I was out and needed to sharpen my hawk. A foam emery board(womens finger nail file). My wife left one in the Jeep so I thought what the hey. Worked pritty darn good in a pinch and they cost next to nothing so she says.

Has anyone used one of these sharpeners?? I was wondering how fine the ceramic side is? The diamond side is 600grit I believe but it doesn't say anything about the ceramic side except that its made of synthetic sapphires. If its fine enough to put a nice polish on the edge it may be the perfect portable sharpener. A couple of the credit card sized diamond stones might be a good choice too and maybe make a little leather case for the stones that could also be used as a small strop.

I've been trying to get my hands on a Fallkniven DC3 or 4 but they always seem to be out of stock. They get great reviews.

As a matter of fact I have been using them for several years now.

I don't know what grit the ceramic is, but it will put a polish on the edge (it will also put a wicked point on a fish hook :D )

The DC stones come with a leather slip case.

Some great recomendations ... the dmt diafold is impressive although the handle bulks it up a bit, the Fallkniven stones are very similar to one that I use already and just hard to carry with the knife, the viking pendant works although I'm looking toward the sharpener staying with the knife and the nail file surely is a good idea for a disposable tool.
Through following the suggestions I found referance to the stick ceramic sharpeners perhaps damaging an edge if not careful?
So it seems as though I need to continue different ways of connecting pouches to the sheath and maybe following the vikings for the folder.

Hows this for an idea ... mixing fine sand with glue and filling a straw?

if you're not good at free hand sharpening and looking for a way to sharpen/touch up blades in the field try a byrd duck foot sharpener.

they're made by spyderco and are relatively cheap.

i have one lying around somewhere and i recall it being a great field sharpening tool. mainly because i suck at free hand sharpening unless its on my big bench stones at home.

cheers

Thanks Mick

jca21 ... nice to have angle guide also.

I seem to like the ceramic sticks for portability in my kit. Are they brittle ... drop it on a rock and it breaks?

While I don't know how precisely it'll sharpen a knife... I think it'll do just fine if I really had to use it. I have one of these in my survival kit as a striker for my ferro rod:

It's a lawnmower blade sharpener. You can get them at Home Depot or Lowes. I cut it down to about two inches long. Works great as a striker. Should work fine as an emergency sharpener.
