I had this scrap of steel which resembled a sort of blade with a short stubby tang.
I decided to forge a knife out of it. I firts started drawing out the tamng into a long (about 25 cm) tang squaree in section, then I forged the blade, which ended being quite sleek in profile.
The tang was folded in two, profiled on the anvil's horn and the end folded over itself to form a guard. To avoid the grip thus formed to wobble laterally I tack welded it with my arc welder. One side only, as I feared that putting too much soft iron there would weaken the point in which the blade is attached to the "grip". I could have brazed it, but I couldn't do it after HT and feared the braze would melt during HT, and wasn't good enough to do it DURING HT and quench.
I decided against leaving the blade as "brut de forge" and hollow ground it (screwing up the hollow grin as I always do :grumpy
but in the end the result was quite nice.
The blade was then cleaned and tempered to dark straw yellow twice (just to stay on the safe side).
I planned leaving the grip as it is, but a firend suggested grinding the sides to shine and leavinge the upper, lower and interior parts as forged.
What do you think of the knife and the solutions I adopted?
You can have a look at it here, in its unfinished status after HT. I still have to finish it.
Suggestions?
