I found myself in a nostalgic mood today and picked up one of the new Mini Mag LED's at the local giant hardwear complex. Though I do own multiple Surefires and Fenix lights, I still have all of the Mags I have purchased since about 1983.(have a handy 2C for the wife to use, and a 5D cell under the bed to use as a "Johnny Bench batter up" on someone's ass if surprised at night). The Mini Mag was my first "good" flashlight I bought for deer camp back in the day. I know there are many more powerfull lights, but I like the "American made" commitment of the owner. does anybody else still have some love for the old Ontario CA. standard?

I do........... ;)
I picked up one of the new mini's the other day with the four functions...... Bright, Low, Flash, & SOS.
Kinda cool and uses AA batteries too........ ..... Eneloops in mine.

I still have more Maglite brand flashlights than any other, but I almost never use them. I never have liked the twisty switch mechanism on the small lights (I don't like Cross pens for the same reason) and they don't seem to be keeping up with technology very well. Too bad, as I would really like a Maglite Solitaire bright enough to be useful in less than pitch-black conditions. I'd like it even better with a clicky switch.

Yeah.. I spent the day playing around with my new adjustable setting Minimag.(good beam throw/bright) It's pretty cool though the "twisty" bezel switch takes getting used to. It won't be replacing any of my Surefires, but for under $20.00 I like it.

The MM lights seem to bet a bad rap among the flashlight crowd, but I like 'em. I've swapped out my D & C cells to LED's. Saves on battery life and they're brighter than the incandescent factory bulbs. I too have Surefire, Streamlight, Innova, etc, but the Mag's are ok by me.

I love the new LED mini maglite's much more than the older light bulb ones.Use to burn my mini-mags bulbs out ever so often but what I like best is the value and brightness the LED's offer.

They're considered bad for the same reason some knife nuts discount 1095 and simple carbon steels. When you have top tier stainless and high alloy steels, why would you ever need something made out of 1095?

First real flashlight I ever bought was a 6D Maglite. Ate batteries like a beater car drinks oil, but it had a good thrown and damn it was bright. Then I got an E2DL and realized I could fit it in my back pocket much better then hanging it off my belt. The LED upgrades for the maglites are good though, bang for your buck. Or you could try a Malkoff.

Maglite is my favorite flashlight. I keep a Solitare on my keyring, and various size D-cell models in my car and all around the house. The build quality is as good as it gets and now that the LED models are out they have greater brightness and longer burn times than ever. I currently only have the minis in LED but over time I plan to upgrade all my D-cells to the 3-watt LED unit. I have wanted a Surefire for sometime but for a civilian like myself I just can't justify paying that much for a flashlight that also uses expensive batteries. I might buy a Tektite someday however, I think their Trek models are really neat.

I have been lusting after a nice LED Surefire, but like the above post, I just can't ssem to bring myself to spend that kind of money. I love the LED Maglites. Awesome bang for the buck.

I have put a Mini Mag and Leatherman on with my pants every day for years now. I like the new LED model but it has a quirk. The contact in the flashlite head can get corroded and kill the light. Never had that with the old incandescent version. Someone on the net suggested a polishing the contact with the eraser end of a pencil followed by blowing out dust with compresssed air. Works fine. Good luck with your Maglight.

Yeah, I picked up one of those at Wal Mart, and although the light is decent for a two AA flash, that is the most annoying switch I have ever encountered on anything in my entire life. I'll stick with the Coleman Max series lights, even if they are rebranded imports.

I've used Maglites™ for years as they were the most readily available "quality" flashlights for a long time. Even now, I still like the new LED Maglites™ and have a number of them for home and field use. Sure there are smaller, brighter (and more expensive!) lights available but the Maglites™ do everything I need in a sturdy, reliable package.

Been using Maglites since the early eighties.I've been thinking of purchasing a Surefire for years now. But,like some, don't want to cough up that kind of dough for a flashlight.

My Surefires (G2's/9P) are my "I need bright light RTF now" tools, and a Fenix LD-10 for EDC. The incandescent G2 is a quality light for about $35.00. I see the led Mini Mag as a nice medium for utility uses.

The most current 3 watt AA Mag with multi modes (hi, lo, stobe, SOS) does a great job as a bicycle headlight. Mounted on a TwoFish brand handlebar attachment, it illuminates the road real well in almost complete darkness. Velcro attachment allows for easy on/ of mounting if you need it for different tasks.

The new LED mini-mags rock. I saved up to splurge on a Surefire G2, E2DL, and Fenix L2D Q5 (absolutely NO regrets), but the LED mini-mags are just awesomely simple and reliable lights that get the job done. Really great quality, and such value at that price.:thumbup:

Incidentally, I upgraded one of my old incan mini-mags with the Nite-Ize conversion kit, and unless I botched the installation somehow, it doesn't hold a candle to the stock LED mini-mags. The quality of output is just poor. I'm wondering if I got a bad apple or damaged the LED during the installation....

This is the upgrade you want http://www.led-replacement.com/tle-5ex.html

Ah, the Terra-lux upgrade! Thanks knifenut, I should have gone with that one in the first place since I've seen it mentioned quite a few times before.

That's the Nite-Ize conversion with three 1/10 watt LEDs, right? Don't expect the output of a 3 watt LED from that. It's good for runtime and close-up work.
