Do you guys like them? I have a Maglite 2D which i love, but i need something easier to carry. I was looking at a surefire G2 (favorite company) but the carry time for the batteries and cost of batteries and such don't appeal to me. So I will not be buying it. I've been looking at the mini maglite but i decided to come here and see what you guys have to say. Just the normal one, not the LED. I compared the LED to the normal and besides for longer batteries theres no difference in brightness really, not worth the extra 10$. I can buy the upgrade later on if i want to. So thoughts?

Honestly, I would look at anything other than a Mag-Lite. don't get wrong, I like them and I carry them. But they only fit the market of a cheap light. If a cheap light is what you are looking for, pick up a River Rock or Coleman light. Heck, you can go to a decent sporting goods retailer and pick up a Brinkmann that would work MUCH better than a Mini Mag.

The reason i was going for the mag was because i've abused my 2d mag and it still looks brand new! Dropped it, hammered with it, still on the first bulb for over 6 years. Batteries not the first pair lol but other than that it still rocks. My local knife shop has mag lites and surefires, the runtimes on the surefires disgust me though, so thats why i was considering the mag. I had a cheapie knockoff mag i liked, but the real thing seemed a bit better. Coleman makes me feel sick, i dislike where the brand has gone with their products. Why negativity towards it? Thank you for your input though.

Don't get me wrong, Mag makes a decent light. Mostly bulletproof. I was just basing my thoughts on my usage. I work late nights doing security. I need something that will light up a pretty big stretch and Mag-Lite, even with LED upgrades, cannot fill the gap I need. However, I did recently pick up a 2D Mag LED to keep in our company truck and it is surprisingly bright. It is also extremely bulky, which only becomes a concern when you are already carrying a ton of other gear as I do.

Also, if you want a AA Mag, shoot me your address, I think I have 3 or 4 of them laying around and I certainly don't need them.

You could also consider something the size of the mini-Mag, but in an LED format and feeding on rechargeable AA batteries. I mention often here lights like the Fenix or Quark series (4sevens.com) that have multiple output levels and crank 200 lumens. The LED will never pop when you drop the light, and if you use rechargeable AA NiMH batteries from Walmart or Target, you have "free" lumens and can top off your battery charge whenever you want. Just another option.

Wow, what a generous offer! I have not a penny to my name though, so shipping would be an issue. But I would gladly take them off your hands.

Shipping is only a few bucks. Don't worry about it. I won't be able to get it out til Friday.

You'll find out that the guys around here are really generous and all. I'm just passin on a favor.

Well thanks man, they'll be going to a good home. Knives and flashlights are my kryptonite, but affording them is another issue lol. Umm, can you get on AIM and i'll pass on my info, i can't PM. my screen name is the same as on here.

I used a MM for almost daily for 15 years as an EDC pocket light. If you know it's limitations and stay within them it's a great light. Mag recently came out with Xenon bulbs for it and the consensus is they're much brighter than before.

It's been used as a platform for modification in the past, however with the introduction of newer, smaller and more powerful LED lights I think the MM's days of mod host are limited.

Go to candlepowerforums.com and dig around. You'll like it.

I used them for years, and still have a pair that get regular use even though there are better lights out there.

Think of the AA Maglite as the Mora of lights.

I used a bone stock mini-mag AA for many years on the job, we both went through hell and back together. Bulbs were the only issue as I was always burning them out after a drop. I now disdain lights without an anti-roll body, what a nuisance. They are good lights for the money I guess, but I have since moved on to Fenix and 4-Sevens for my lighting needs.

I love the nostalgia of the Maglites but IMHO they are a waste of money unless you plan to upgrade them.

I have a 3D Mag , the light it puts out is dismal compared to the little no name 1 AAA in my toolbag and cant even begin to be compared to my Fenix or Streamlights.

On the other hand the Nite Eyez upgrade for my Mag AAA made it very worthy of carrying as an extra light in my pickup.

I have a few mini-mags. i find the bulbs break fairly easily when dropped. They are a well priced lower quality flashlight.

Maglites set the standard many years ago. They are very tough. But, they are many other cost effecent flashlights on the market today. I just bought a coast led lenser flashlight and it is much brighter than my maglight. check out there website (www.coastportland.com)

The Maglite AA was my first ever quality torch, and they were new here in the UK about that time. I bought mine through a special offer by Handgunner magazine, I think that I paid about $30 (equivalent £>$) and this was in the 1980's!

Reckon they set the ball rolling on making good lights, and look where that's brought us!

Currently have AA, AAA and a 2D, though I EDC a P3D, Petzl e+Lite and Photon Freedom Micro CN's. The small size and light sabre performance of the P3D with smooth reflector is something I love.

Always had switch problems with all my Maglites, they were really temperamental, and in truth, I had way too many fail to functions to trust them as EDC.

I'm very impressed with Fenix, Photon and Petzl.

I have a mini mag that has been with me for 30 years. I had it long before I discovered high end lights and used it a lot. I keep it for sentimental reasons. It has not been used in years. I have a Fenix P2D that is smaller and 20 times brighter. They are tough little buggers and can take a lot of punishment and keep going. But there are much better alternatives out there now days.

if a flashlight was an integral part of my job, i'd consider some of the higher end lighting equipment...but it isn't, and so the maglite at home, in the backyard, and camping work out just fine...it isn't a matter of cost either...i have since retrofitted my 4D cell and 2AA cell models with LED's; i give up the beam adjustment, but gain bigtime in reduced power consumption...

i still find it difficult to comprehend the lust some people have over flashlights...
