All of Spyderco's MBC folders appear to have been designed with legalities in mind, aiming at the two most commonly imposed blade length limits of today: 4" and 3"

List of the present and proposed MBC folders:

~3.75" : Chinook, Ayoob, and Temperance
~3" : Gunting, Temperance Jr., and Yojimbo

As yet the most restrictive length limit found here in the US, and around the world, hovers at 2.5" (if knife carry hasn't been banned entirely), leaving many places where even a Gunting cannot go. Has Spyderco and/or its MBC collaborators given any thought to MBC designs with 2.4" (6cm) blades?

*I am aware of Spyderco's Janich-Perrin 2" balisong concept, but I don't know if it is considered an MBC design (I haven't seen it).

A ladies'/gent's Gunting has been conceived, but only the prophets can fotell the day of its birth. It has been given a name, which can be discerned from this riddle given to us by the prophets: "Worn everyday, they cover the ten." Curious eh?

All that is left for the faithful is to watch and pray. :)

I agree that this is an niche in the MBC market that Spyderco should consider filling. I have been hoping that Spyderco will combine two of their areas of expertise(small knives and MBC) and produce a Mini MBC blade. I would be interested in a small knife (around 2") with a convential look, innocent name and a MBC strength lock. Such a knife could be used as a primary knife or as a backup. A modified Cricket might even do the job.

Do you have any technical design details on the gentleman's Gunting?

I was thinking of something along the line of a Temperancized Salsa: beefed up steel comprsession lock, and grippier scales (G10?) in a sedate colour (OD or khaki).

Perhaps a variation of the hypothetical Mini Rescue would work too. Same orange FRN handle, but with a flat-ground leaf blade with plain edge.

I agree 100% that a Mini MBC folder would have to look totally innocuous -- just meeting the 2.5" blade length limit wouldn't be enough to avoid PC harassment.

Bram's "little Gunting" has a blade length of 2.25 ".

I will have a plstic concept model at the New York Show.

The Mike Janich 2" blade on a full size bali is still being considered.

Would a bali with a 2" blade be CA legal?
(I know a switchblade knife with a blade 2" or below is supposedly legal here, not sure if the bali is considered a switchblade in the same way under the law).
Thanks,
Jim

When I moved back to the U.S. and the prejudice against balisongs began to hit hard, I reluctantly retired my Model 68 and switched to a more conventional folder. Then one day I had the bright idea to circumvent the bali prejudice by creating a short-bladed butterfly with conventional handles that would be the equivalent of a California-legal switchblade. I promptly drafted a letter describing the concept and sent it off to Benchmade, but never received a reply.

How about Model 68-sized (about 4-inches)titanium handles (nicely rounded in cross section to roll easily), magnets in the handles, a pocket clip on the "free" handle (the one into which the blade edge folds), and a 1-15/16-inch blade with an extended, V-shaped tang for striking? The short blade/long handle combination would require a subtle technique adjustment to avoid getting nicked by the blade point, but I think it would be a great concept that might allow some bali fans to once again carry legally.

In theory, yes. a bali under 2" "should" be legal in CA.
