Did the first light today and all I can say is....BOY HOWDY. I have never had a burner like this before. It needed to be choked before staying lit but it is a windy day. I'm going to do some tuning tonight and mount it.

I've got about $20.00 and 2 hours tied up in it and it beats the ever loving pants off my EZ burner.

OH... I didn't like the plans and made some changes that work very well. Anyone wants to know about them let me know.

I did the first real tune tonight. Man it puts out some heat but it needs a flare. This picture is without a flare:

The next picture is with an improvised flare and not near to spec so it's still running cool:

Even running crippled, I was able to bring a 1/2 inch rod to high yellow in 3 minutes.

That 2nd picture is really beautiful. I'd think about entering it into some photo contest or something.

Have any of the pro photographers who do knives ever made any pics like it? I only know enuff about art to know what I like, most of the time. Still, I'd think that some really cool pictures could be made with heated billets, etc. showing in the blue flames. I knew you guys made beautiful knives, but didn't know you worked in such beautiful surroundings -- well, I do remember reading about some bladesmith who prefers doing forging at night because it is easier to distinguish the colors of the heated steel.

Very impressive indeed!!!

That is one sharp flame!!!

I am looking at it from two standpoints here: the impressiveness of it for blademaking reasons...and the artistic beauty of the photo as Bugs pointed out.

Very nice...

I finished my Mini Mongo burner today and after tuning it, I was afraid to put it in the mini forge I built for it. I went ahead and made a brick forge just to test in. Not my first idea today (You can NOT use a terra cotta flower pot for a forge)

Anyway It worked so well I thought I'd make some Motorcycle chain damascus. Well...I didn't have any Borax left so I tried wood ashes. The first thing I found out was that the short tongs I had been using were not long enough. I have first and second degree burns on my left thumb where I kept sneaking up and trying to grab it and run.

The second thing I found out was that wood ashes work poorly. ( I got a good weld on One link)

The third thing I found out was that this is the hottest darn forge I've ever seen. I was burning the hair on my arm at 2 feet. It will bring the chain to weld tempature in 2 minutes from a dead cold. Re-heating is less than 30 seconds. This is at 10 pounds of pressure. It's almost as fast at 5. I turned it to 15 and burned up a section of chain in about 2 and a half minutes.

I need to do a lot of experimenting before I get any good work from it. I also need to make some new tongs.
