Mini persion

One of my best friends is graduating from Baylor this weekend and he likes Spyderco. I want to get him a sub hundred dollar knife, something real nice looking (he's going to be a doctor), EDCable, and I was thinking the mini persion fit the bill...what do you guys think?

Also considering a Kopa...wood or black micarta?

My personal feeling would be that the KOPA in Black Micarta would be a little more "friendly" in the environs of medicine. I have not handled the new mini-Persian, but the original Persian would raise a few eyebrows if whipped out in the "clinic".

Just my $ 0.02 worth.

The MINI Persian would be fine, as long as he doesn't use it in a clinic, hospital, etc. Anything other than a scalpel or kitchen knife tends to raise eyebrows in medical environs (My delica did). A Kopa, with its 'sheeple' friendly looks may be fine for him to carry anywhere, even a hospital. The pocket lip on the Kopa will be great for discreetly placing the knife on scrubs or a dress shirt pocket while not 'advertising' it's a knife. The micarta may be better as he can clean it with a disinfectant, or stronger cleaner, in case any nasties (blood, body fluids) get on it. The wood looks better, IMHO, but may be harder to thoroughly clean.

Another good one may be the Kiwi with the solid metal handles.

Hope this helps.

I'm thinking wood kopa now....he's very outdoorsy, I'll bet he'll appreciate the wood one...a lot more money than I was hoping to spend, but I'll just cancel the knife I ordered for myself for christmas to compensate.

Way to go A.M., you've the spirit of Christmas!

great christmas spirit Art......just dont get him a military or police to whoop out in the examination room.....might send somebody runnin down the halls...

Well, he's thinking about being a surgeon, so I was thinking maybe a Civilian might do the trick. Something non intimidating to keep those patients calm.

Good idea. I know I'd be perfectly comfortable if my surgeon were to open me up with a huge, curved serrated blade like a Civillian. It would make a nice, clean, controlled cut with minimal scarring. ;)

No, seriously, a Kopa is a great idea. I think the micarta is a little dressier (and definitely easier to clean, although I don't think there's much chance of getting bodily fluids on it... Doctors don't use their personal [read: non-sterile] pocket knives on patients; there are proper instrments), but I like the look of the wood better.

It's also a nice size. Not too big to be dressy, but not too small to be useful like the Kiwi is IMO.

Peace.

The Mini Persian is an excellent knife. Do a search in the Spyderco forum for my review!
