I just picked up a japanese "carpenters" knife from lee valley so i though i'd just share a few things about it.

The Blade is a scmimitar profile with surprisingly symmertrical grinds and came sharp enough to shave hair. The problem is the site does not specify the blade steel so if anybody knows feel free to chime in. The steel itself is finely grained and rated at HRC60.

The handle is made of solid brass with etching on both sides of it. It, however has some bad erogonomics because the handle is just a rectangle, which isn't particullarily comfortable.

Here is the link and please do take a look and get back to me on the bladesteel question.

well, you have one in your possession correct? Look over the blade/handle etc for any markings at all. I'm guessing its a decent quality high carbon steel, that high RC60 would make it brittle to striking with as would the brass lockup/handle.

Looks great for slicing and cutting though...since its probably not stainless you'll have to oil/take care of it a bit, but shouldn't be much issue. Tell us how it works out for you ok?

I've seen knives that looked exactly like that advertised with aogami, or "blue" steel. It is a good carbon / tungsten steel. There are 3 different variants. Aogami 1, 2, and "super Blue", all with slightly different chemistry. The 3 variants, along with "White" and "yellow" steels are listed here:http://www.paragoncode.com/temp/YSS_HCC_spec.pdf On Jim Wilson's page. Thanks to Mr. Wilson. Joe
