I've been considering this knife for a while and finally had time to do a topic search on it. I found a number of posts re: lock failures with the Socom series. What's everyone's current experience with this knife? Is it truly prone to lock failure?

I heard the same thing. Another excuse to buy the auto. Not much difference in price. I've been trying to decide on which blade to get.

I had two clip point mini-SOCOMs, one with a gray handle, one with a purple handle. Both locked up as good as my 4-inch SOCOM's, so slop or end-shake. There probably was one that slipped out of the factory and it got reported on the 'net. But MT is so anal about quality, I'll bet it was fixed in a hurry at no charge. Microtech is the only company I buy knives from sight unseen. I have seen ONE flaw. A minor chip in a smaller serration; I was inspecting the edge during sharpening with a loop. It was the only way the chip could be seen...--OKG

The mini Socom makes a great pocket carry knife. With its different blade shapes and finishes, auto or manual you can certainly find one that you will like. If you look around you can get a great deal one one as well.

Personally I think MT has just about the fiercest QC of any production knife company. I've got 4 of them and played with one or two more belonging to my knife buddies. All I can say is that every one I handled had superb lockup characteristics, which is more than I can say for several other companies.
