I may be posting just to post on this one. as I kind of know the answers but anyway I would like to hear what everyone has to say.

I am going to be getting a small tanto folder and no one can stop me. I've got it down to two knives although I'm sure i'll get a couple more suggestions from y'all (that's why I come here)
the first is the Microtech mini Socom and the second is the Emerson mini CQC7B. I'm kinda leaning toward the Emerson.

so what do y'all say about those two knives besides mentioning QC problems with Emerson. I have an Emerson I've become familliar with several Emersons I love Emerson Knives and am not worried about a QC problem with either the Emerson or the Microtech. I have never had a Microtech and I'm just wondering if it's worth the little extra Bread. I have handled both knives and like each one and I know I probably won't go wrong either way just fishing for opinions from users. Thanks y'all

SOCOM, of course! The quality of machining, fit and finish is superior, and there is another thing: the SOCOM can cut as well, where the CQC is only for stabbing. If you want to really use the knife, then the SOCOM is the one to have.

Of course, if you just want to clip a knife on your "Tactical Assault Vest", then you could choose the Emerson along with the Rolex watch...

care to explain this? Are you not a fan of chissel grinds?

uh Costas I have an emerson with a Chisel grind and it will cut stuff. Ya see I sharpened it and sharp stuff cuts things. I'm not really into poking people with it but I do cut a lot of things. because it's sharp....and it cuts things with the sharp edge. it's just flat on one side but since it's sharpened it still cuts. I wouldn't clip the knife to my tactical assault vest or Load Bearing Vest cause that's in my closet. I don't wear it much because I work in a hospital now and don't go to the field much. But if I did then I would be ok cause my Emerson still cuts.

oh well I guess I did ask for opinions.

I would propose one simple test: if somebody has both knives, I would like to ask him to take a regular wooden pencil and try to sharpen it with these knives. Then, he could try to cut it in half with one quick cutting (not chopping) stroke, and tell us about his findings.

I do not want to offend anyone, and I do not sell cutlery. Anyone can try both these knives and decide for himself.

I just want to add that I own a regular-sized CQC-7 and a Mini SOCOM, so I have first hand experience. Photos and specs are fine, but, like automobiles, you never know until you "drive".

For EDC, all-around cutting use I would definitely take the Mini-Socom. Mine has a wonderful, thinly ground polished edge that is much more suitable for the types of cutting tasks required of a knife in this size range. My CQC-7Bs are better suited to more "rough" cutting and slashing, where it doesn't really matter that the chisel edge tends to skate off in one direction. I also like the CQC's chisel edge for scraping, light levering and digging tasks. Sharpening a pencil or whittling with the "wrong sided" chisel grind of the CQC is also more of a PITA than with a nice double bevel if you ask me. I like both knives and will probably buy a Mini CQC-7A at some point since I already have two full size 7Bs.
