I was wondering what everyone thinks of the mini task. Secondly, should I be concerned that this is going to become illegal soon?

So..they have finally decided that the Torsion bar is real just another way to make a knife automatic?

This has confused me. I went into mental flipflops when CRKT had their customs problems wondering why in hell Kershaw didn't, until I remembered Kershaw makes them in Oregon, and the don't come in thru customs. Would tend to doubt that Customs worries what goes out.

Is there some solid information about something happening with Kershaw or any of the other assisted openers?

I like mine. The thin hollow grind geometry of the knife make it a good cutter. The corners of the handle are a little to sharp, I may round them. I like the G-10 handles. The blade opens with authority. More so than their larger assisted models. I think there is a cloud about their legality. I know of no legal cases one way or the other, but in my reading of my state's laws, they would be illegal. On the other hand the local brick and morter store sells them.

I have the Ricochet, which is a kind of "first cousin" of the Random Task and Mini Task.

As far as I know, legality is not a problem with these assisted-opening knives.

I live in NY State, which has some pretty tough weapons laws, and it is no prob. here.

The Mini-task is a slick little knife, quick, small and smooth. I have the old ATS-34 version, but would think that the 440c model should stand up as well.

Bigbass, The mini task is a great little knife. The 440C is shaving sharp out of the box. Fits well in the hand for a small knife. Opens just as quick as any auto. Yes they are still legal or the brick and mortar shops would not be selling them.
The mini has a 2 & 11/16th inch blade. Handle is 3 & 1/4. The G10 scales makes for a classy handle. Great knife. The random task is also great. 3 & 1/4 blade, 4 &1/4 handle, 440V blade. You will be pleased with either one or better yet, get both, I did. Do a search and check out all the web sites if buying on line, the prices vary greatly. You should be able to get the mini for around $90.00 and the random for around $100.00.

I really like my miniTask! I find the Wharncliffe blade shape to be a great utility blade, and I really like the fact that Kershaw offered this in a true left-handed model.

I'm crazy about our mini-Task! Next to my old mini-AFCK, it's my favorite tac knife. If you like the Wharnecliff blade, you can't go wrong with it. RKBA!

Yep,my first "real" knife was a kershaw whirlwind. My two favorite knives are the mini task and afck.
Great little knife,i was about to sell it,but couldnt make myself do it.

I have one of the older, original style mini-tasks. I got if from Beam (Roger) a coupld of years ago. I like it a lot. It's light, elegant, feels good and cuts well. The only problem I have with it is that it has lately stopped snapping open with authority. It no longer snaps and locks, but just sort of gets close to fully open and then runs out of steam. I can't seem to find kershaw on the web. If I try www.kershawknives.com I get the result "www.kershawknives.com could not be found. Please check the name and try again." Knifecenter lists an email address of "kershaw@kershawknives.com" but that fails too. DNS can't fine kershawknives.com, either. Naturally, I haven't kept the box and paperwork from the knife, so I don't have a snail-mail address for Kershaw. If anyone does have an address for them, I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail me the contact information. Various people have said that Kershaw's customer service was good, but if they don't have a web site or e-mail anymore, I would be worried that they may have gone out of the business. If so, then I would be reluctant to buy one. If they are still in business, you're probably ok.

A tool is, basically, an object that enables you to take advantage of the laws of physics and mechanics in such a way that you can seriously injure yourself.

The website for Kershaw appears to have "gone south", at least for now. I couldn't bring it up either.

As far as I know, the company is alive and well. They give a phone # in their print ads of: 1-800-325-2891. Give it a try. The website might be down for maintenance.

I own a left handed Mini-Task and I like it a lot.For reasons I don't understand I think Kershaw is discontinuing this fine knife,so if you want one you better get it while you can.

The CRKT thing with Customs never surprised me much after their flap with Spyderco some years back. What happened then was some Civilians were imported and those that were serrated were impounded as switchblades, while the plain-edge copies were allowed through despite no difference in mechanism.

Sounds about as logical as anything ATF comes up with, although I don't know of anyone having hung a nickname on Customs the same way people refer to ATF as "F-Troop."

Given general hysteria, if you want a torsion-assisted folder, best to buy one now & hope preexisting models are grandfathered. As soon as some low-life legislator (I realize that's as redundant as saying "head hat") gets wind of them, there'll be mass hysteria in legislative sessions everywhere.
