Thought I'd try and make a mini Tin Can stove today....

I quickly realised that I should have made lots more vent holes near the top as the cup kept smothering the flames out !

I raised the cup with two bits of wood and this allowed the fire to keep burning ! Just as it was starting to boil my tinder had all burnt out !!!

For future attempts I need more vent holes and will maybe also try it using a couple of tea light candles or even some fire lighter cubes !

very cool Pit...that one came out great.. those are a lot of fun to make...:)

Neat, just looking at your design, I'd try to get a coffee can or something a bit wider then your pot. Then I'd cut a couple of slots near the top and slide a couple of aluminum tent pegs through the slots to act as a floor for the pot to rest on. This will act as a vent (depending on how much room between the pot bottom and stove), enable you to nest your cook pot into your stove and finally you will have two ready made tent stakes for an emergency shelter needs. The tent pegs are good at other tasks also, like a spur of the moment Marlin's spike or set of slippery chop sticks.

The 20 oz soup cans work very well for such an application. If you make vent holes toward the top and near the bottom, but not on the bottom, then you can burn other substances like alcohol. Good job and happy tinkering!

Pretty cool, pitdog! I've made a few before also with sterno cans as fuel. Vent hole size, number, and placement all are important.

I have a couple of the same mountain-man mugs ( I love 'em !) , but take forever to boil with a tea candle. Not too bad with the Sterno. Triox. tabs are another good heat source.
