I started out with my framing square and fancy ideas, but the angles I drew were so small that I just screwed together a prototype to see if it would work. It's just a ladder stood against the wall at a steep angle. (Dowels would be prettier rungs, but this is the remotest corner of my basement, and the 2-bys were really cheap.) Next time I'll inlet the rungs and I won't need the diagonal strapping.

Turns out I have only 27 axes, not counting hatchets and helveless axe-heads. Even so, I can't decide how to sort them- by brand, by pattern, by phantom bevel-hood?

I store mine in the basement storage room near the furnace. It's clean, dry, and has airflow. They're stored head-down as follows:
A 2" X 12" board is on the ground, elevated with small wooden legs. The board is 7 feet long, but can be cut down or added to.
The back is another 2" X 12", and is attached to form an "L".
The ends are more 2" X 12" , and every 4" there's another one attached. The height of these is 10".

It looks like a row of shoe boxes lined up, but with no top or front.

I like this idea - I have mine in a corner. Not good enough.
Near the furnace is a good plan. That would be more dry than elsewhere in the basement, but never hot.
Hmmm....

I need to do something like this. My axes are leaning against a garage wall with a scrap of carpet under them to protect the toe. I'm a carpenter for gawdsakes. I should do better.

I'm stealing your idea. :) I've got the perfect spot behind the furnace, too, which is running all the time, now.

Yup, need to get on board this boat. Mine are all leaned up in a corner too.

Peg, you said it. Hell, I even teach carpentry.
