One nice thing about the internet is getting to meet people you would normally have not met. My friend Bruce sent me a box with several pieces of native wood a few months ago. The first piece I chose to try is called Miniritchie. I think it was the dark color that attracted my eye at first. After closer examination I started noticing some curl which perked my interest even more. Here's a few pictures of the finished knife. I've never see a wood that is so night and day difference according to the light source. First two pictures were taken using my normal picture taking set up. The last picture was taken in the shade outside on a bright clear day. The knife has a 3 1/2" saw steel blade, iron fittings with the Miniritchie handle. 7 1/4" overall.

Nice looking knife Raymond. Bruce gave me some of the miniritchie too. It has allot of charactor and deep colors going on. Its new to me but looks to be on par with the ringed gidgee and I love that wood.

Do you guys know what that wood is related to? I also thought that it looked a lot like gidgee. I'll have to try to get my hands on some.

Nice knife, by the way. You've really taken that style to a new place, and I like it.

Awesome Ray!

Do you think it'd make a good hawk handle?

Eli, It probably would make a good hawk handle if you could find a piece of it large enough. I haven't been able to find any of it for sale and if it is priced as high as ringed gidgee it would be very expensive.

Its from the Acacia family. Its common name is Red Mulga. We also have a Black Mulga but i havent had any with curl like this yet. Im sure Dave Brodziak has had some though.

Cheers Bruce

wood, shmood!
Ray, you could use a dog turd for a handle and your knives would still blow my mind. Just like another guy we know, (who actually DID use a dog turd for a handle- well, it looked like a dog turd)

I've been hard at work on that blank, I'll have you know, and I'm getting closer and closer to getting an idea that I might actually get there one day.
It will be worth it:)

Love the design of your knife Raymond. Simple and elegant. It's like the functionality of a puukko made better with a more drop point shape and even more enhanced with the type of grind you did.

Wonderful Puukko Ray. You have a gift not granted to very many, thanks for sharing with us.

Bruce never gave me no wood. :D:D That actually sounds a little creepy now that I wrote it down, but I'm sticking with it. He did send me some barramundi skin though.

Very nice looking, Ray
