Hello,

After I recieved my 20" villager I decided that I wanted to use kiwi on my sheath. Now, what I am wondering is if I put mink oil on the sheath as well, will it better waterproof it? I've always used this method on my boots and I know it will soften the leather, but will it make less usable? I tend to beat the crap out of most of my belongings and I need my sheath to hold up. It gets real wet here in South Bend all throughout the winter and spring and I want added protection. Any advice is welcome. Also while I'm bothering everyone, whats your favorite type of sharpener for a khuk? I'm really bad free hand but I want to get better. My success in carring a system sharpener into the woods has been minimal to say the most. Thanks.

Where the lion's skin will not reach, you must patch it out with the fox's.

Most of the V shaped sharpeners aren't made wide enough at the top for the thickness of a khuk. There's a tungsten carbide V sharpener that is only about 1/2" deep and so will work on a khukuri. The one I have is called a Bucksharp. I don't recommend it, it hogs metal off and doesn't get that sharp a blade.
It does, used lightly and sparingly, return a blade to a usefully sharp condition in a couple of seconds. That's what I use ( of course I've about given up on getting anything supersharp since I dropped the 3x8" razor hone on concrete ).

Mink oil is TOPIC NUMBER *1,000* in this forum!

Gawd, I hope the rest of this bunch have more exciting stuff to talk about than meaningless trivia like this.
