Minwax for handle?

Anxiously awaiting my first kukri, a chainpuri. It's a villager and from the looks of the picture (dotd 12/19/06) it probably comes unfinished. While I was in home depot I picked up some minwax black walnut stain/finish. Will this be ok to use on the handle?

It would surely work OK. Is that the minwax polyurethane? I don't care for poly on the khuk handles.

But I've found that the handles don't need stain at all, unless you want to change the color.

Sand smooth and apply Tung Oil or Danish Oil and the handles look great.

Maybe soak in mineral oil beforehand.

I do this all the time, but others are more expert.

I agree with Eric. If you use a finish with stain in it, it will hide some of the beautiful grain of the wood. Tung oil, Danish oil, boiled linseed oil, Tru-Oil gunstock finish, even satin urethane will look much much better than a stain/finish combo.

Start sanding with the grain with 220, then 320 or 400 grit. Then apply very thin coats of finish, allowing it to dry between coats. Sand very lightly with 400 grit or with very fine steel wool before applying each next coat.

The only handle I've ever stained was an evergreen, that was white.

Thanks guys, I guess I will do it like a gun stock,tru-oil handrubbed in. Hope it turns out ok,I've never done any sisau before.

Watco works great as a finish or sealer. If you want to top it with a wiping varnish, then you can. If you want a shiney finish, the you can cover it with something like another product by Watco or even with Formby oil varnish.
If you use it by itself - the natural color - you can get a nice satin-dull oil finish that goes well with a villager. If you want gloss, you can use a varnish or varnish-oil blend. Any of the vernish topcoat finishes will be more durable than a straight oil, and easier to apply.
