Here is something very special IMHO

These knives exemplify the work from this very talented maker that I call friend

They merge the ancient with the new

A raw powerful 4.75 inch laminated Brut Deforged Bowie Blade fitted to a classic Japanese Aikuichi style carry package

The hour glass shaped handle with its wasp waist comes from another ancient Japanese design that facilitates a strong grip

The handle is traditionally finished in a modified Japanese style with modern materials and ancient artifacts

The Saya/Scabbard

Here is where things get interesting if the handle and the blade are not complex enough for you :)

The scabbard is a leather lined- wood and carbon finished work of functional art !

What all of this symbolizes is truly a meshing of a raw organic design that incorporates the best from Ancient Blade craft and Modern Blade craft that sets this maker and his work apart from the rest

David like I said has truly set himself apart from the rest......with an eye for detail and craftsmanship that is truly his own style .......... He makes me very proud of him to say the very least

I believe STeven has one of the very first of these and if I can remember correctly...... he is quite fond of it :)

Details :

321SS / W2 san mai, carbon fiber over cedar, carbon fiber ito, ancient walrus ivory kojiri, koshira, and kurigata. and a bronze fuchi. Ancient artifact harpoon tip menuki.
Scabbard / saya is carbon fiber over cedar, leather lined. Lightning strike koiguchi...

Yes there are 2 but none available :(

One is for a customer in Germany and the other is destined for the Seattle Show so some lucky someone has a shot at it :)

There is something pleasing to my eye about the wrap over carbon fiber. Nice couple of pieces there.

The original and still my favorite.....notice the deep grind on the clip and the grind on the bevels that really approximates hamon

Yup....am real fond of mine....nice to see David working in this style, as always.

Super cool, love David's style. Can't wait to check it out in Seattle.

Ha! And I'm going to the show! Looking forward to seeing David's work. Meeting David and being able handle his work last year was such an enjoyable treat. I definitely feel the same way about his work as you do Joe. Thanks for stating it in much better terms than I could. Mike

P.S. Seeing as I have a couple of your fine pieces, I'm looking forward to meeting you also, Ben.

Sorry for getting here so late, keeping busy in the shop...
Thanks for the great response to this knife. And thank you Joe for posting...

How this knife came to be...
Last year STeven requested a western blade with Japanese style handle, gave me the parameters and
let me go... If I remember correctly, one thing that he didn't want was a forge textured surface,...
Well, the blade was one that I had in the shop and wanted to finish for myself, so I just made the knife as it was going to be mine.(I can hope)
Everything came together from the beginning with that knife. When it was finished, I really was hoping that Steven would reject it, telling me "I told you I didn't want that damn forged texture you big dummy!" Well, he didn't. I hope to refine this design a little more. I've improved a few things along the way, such as the kurigata, and the lined scabbard.
I will have one completed for the Seattle show. hopefully at least one more for Atlanta...

Oh, I guess STeven will occasionally bend his own rules... I think that he will agree, the texture works well with this knife.

and ............ there is a more refined version in the works,,,

Thanks

Refine it.....? Is That really necessary?

Just joking, all part of the process!

I love it!
